Stop reading now! Yes, everyone loves Paris, but your decision in favor of London is the wise one, especially considering the Madeira connection.
You will have a ball in London. I suggest planning something really special and perfectly "Londonish" to make it really memorable, and not just an add on or second choice. Pick a favorite play, attend a great concert, get a private tour of a museum you love, or take a fantastic daytrip to a cathedral or castle you have somehow missed on previous trips.
On our last trip to London, we visited Leighton House, and it made the trip really special for me, as I love the Pre Raphealites. On a trip before that, a guided tour of the old section of Highgate Cemetary was amazing. How about the Victorian Room at the "old" Tate? It overwhelms me with all the passion and skill of the Victorian painters.
Have a great time!
