It has been a while, so... what's your favorite place on Earth??

What is your favourite place in the entire world? I'm not talking about generally, like a country, I mean more specific as in a city or park or lake etc.

If you can't narrow it down give us your top 3.

Anywhere I am not forced to listen to one half of someone else's cell phone conversation.

[TopMan! I couldn't agree more!! If I'm on a bus or train or anywhere really and my phone rings, I very loudly and pointedly state that I am in x place and don't wish to annoy people around me by having a conversation; I then say that I will call back. I do tend to get dirty looks from others who are having random and unnecessary conversations though!]

Favourite places:

Bed - when it's kind of chilly outside and I've reached perfect duvet temperature (you know what I mean, sometimes it's just 'right'!)

Airports - doesn't matter if I'm flying or not, I just love the feel of the place and what it represents

ATMs - I simply love it when it actually gives me some money toward the end of the month - that makes me very happy indeed!

I've said on many occasions that my vision of heaven is a luxury hotel lobby. The kind with opulent appointments, gracious staff, and well-stocked bar. I must have been a bellman in a previous life.

My second favorite places are pedestrian-only zones in European cities. Of course, that means my favorite city is Venice (for a great many reasons besides that).

Honorable mentions go to Parisian sidewalk cafes (preferably near St. Germain area)and Roman trattorias (preferably near the Piazza Navonna).

Tallulah: You really <i>like</i> airports? Really?

Ok, seriously I think I'd have to go with Venice, Italy for now. A sunset gondola ride in the quiet canals with a bottle of wine. I have a lot more places on earth to see, however, so that is subject to change.

And to make me sound even worse I absolutely adore going to the dentist; I'd go every day given the choice. This may surprise you Americans out there given us Brits reputation when it comes to teeth and oral hygiene! I think it's something to do with the smell there....

For those of you who haven't taken too kindly to my comments lately, my love of the dentist probably fits right in with your perception of me! ;-)

No Tallulah, you're not alone in your love of dentist visits. I think it's very relaxing to go to the dentist--nice, soft chair that flips all the way back--wish I had one just like it for my house! It nearly puts me to sleep! And I like airport terminals, too, especially the international one in Chicago (all those neon lights) and Cincinnati, which is very open in spacious. And I like Atlanta's miles of moving sidewalks. So let's see, that gives me one more favorite place to answer the OP's question. Maybe anywhere that puts me in front of a wide blue, sparkling, warm sea (sand or rock beach; I don't care...).

Well, dln, you could certainly come here. Our previous sand beach is now only rock after all these close passing hurricanes.

dln: I never thought that I'd find someone who also loves the dentist! You've made my day! I might even be nice to the people on here who ask silly questions!! ;-)

I would have to say half way through a game drive in South Africa (half way because you don't have to go to the bathroom yet) watching some two month old baby lion cubs playing a few feet from their mom who naps with her eyes half open.

3. Sitting on the beach at Banzai Pipeline watching surfers early in the morning on the North Shore of Oahu, with a hot Starbuck Latte (light foam) from the Foodland grocery.

2. Watching the sunset at Carmel by the Sea in California with my husband.

1. Siesta in Sevilla, Spain in a busy tapas bar, having wine, and eating the menu del dia with absolutely no concept of time.

I like airports too!! Dentists, not so much.

My favorite place is waking up in a tent pitched in a National Park somewhere with my husband and two sons still sleeping. It is so restful listening to the sounds outside and wondering what great adventures are ahead of us.

Provence, with my bride, passing a field of sunflowers and lavender on the way to dine at La Maison in the Mas de Bournissac, near Palud de Noves/St. Remy with Stephan Grapelli music playing on a CD.

Traveling in Dingle, Ireland near Sleigh Head and environs

San Francisco on a cable car; or the boat ride out to Tiburon; or walking through the redwoods; or visiting the wineries in Napa.......

On Butterfly Beach in Santa Barbara, which is just down the street from my house. I've been all over the world, but I feel so lucky to live in such a lovely town. I stand on the beach with the dog and watch the sunrise or the sunset and can't believe my luck being born and raised in such a place. (And to think, when I was 18, all I wanted was out!) Puts a smile on my face every time!
