Istanbul Taxis take American Dollars?

Will Istanbul taxi drivers accept American dollars in lieu of Turkish Lira?

No first hand experience, but did hear from someone who was there for a day or two last week (cruise)that "everyone" wanted American dollars in Istanbul.

We went to Turkey in late March and yes, they will take American dollars. Just remember that most hotels in the old city/grand Bazaar ,etc. would prefer not to deal with your credit cards as the service charge that the company charges them is outrageous! We paid our hotel bill(Best Western) in american express travelers cheques and also went with over one hundred dollars in singles for tips, etc. Have a great time-it was an amazing trip! They love American dollars. Just be sure to firm up the cost before you get in the taxi.

Just don't expect them to know how to get you to your destination ! We took a printout of our hotel's website with the address & a picture on it - one driver had to stop for directions ( twice ! ) & still took us to the wrong hotel ! The other had to ring them on his mobile 'phone to find out how to get there !
