Istanbul in March?? Would you?
I am suggesting to my boyfriend that we go to Istanbul in a few weeks (He needs to burn up vacation time by the end of March).
When EVER we travel people speak to us in German, etc (we are both pretty blonde) so I'm thinking maybe we dont scream "american". He is hesistant because of the war situation. I think the risk is minimal.

Would you go?

Thanks-

I felt very safe and comfortable in Istanbul a few months ago. Friends of mine living there feel safer at night i Istanbul than in some midsize German towns since there are always people on the streets which care about what's going on next to them. I wouldn't worry too much.

I would go, but there are your boyfriend's feelings to consider. If he's really apprehensive about the prospect of war and anti-American sentiment, then perhaps you should choose a destination that you both feel comfortable with. (I, too, think the risk of you being a "target" is probably minimal)

Given the opportunity, I would go in a heart beat. Turkey is very aware of a possible war and it's probable effect on their tourist economy, hence their request for billions in US aid. So expect decreased numbers of tourists and heightened attention to security and your travel needs. The same thing happened during the Gulf War and I am not aware of any inconvenience to tourists in Turkey. Enjoy!

Istanbul is so wonderful. we were there right after the USS Cole was attacked and blown up. We're not blond, and probably do scream American, even though we are always discreet and low key when we travel. We felt extremely comfortable in Istanbul. It's just a personal decision that probably no one else can make for you. Have a great time if you decide to go. Helaine
