Isle of Skye Lodging
 

Am going to be looking for 3 nights May 31 (bank holiday?), June 1, 2 on the Isle of Skye. If I can find something, would prefer Portree. When I did searches on here, I kept turning up queries from '04, 07, '08 etc.

Opinions on Rosedale, Cuillin, or something else I'm missing here. Sligachan sounded kind of neat, but with only 3 nights would like to not have to make DH drive back and forth to see Portree.

I have stayed at the Cuillin Hills Hotel a couple of times. I like it. If you book it, try and get a room with a view. It's a short walk uphill to the town's centre and the hotel has a lovely setting.They have a popular bistro and nice restaurant, although I haven't eaten in the restaurant for years. You might also have a look at the Marmalade and Viewfield House. Haven't stayed at either, but they are both on my short list of possibilities.

Cuillin Hills is good . . .

But the main thing about the Sligachan is its location. Sure you'd have to drive to Portree - but only once really. Sligachan is just about the crossroads of the whole isle - for touring around it is the most convenient place to stay and is a shorter drive to just about anywhere (other than the Trotternish Peninsula which you'd drive through Portree to get to)

Lets say you want to see Loch Brittle or Elgol . .

Portree > Elgol = about 90 mins
Sligachan > Elgol = about an hour

Portree > Loch Brittle = about 90 mins
Sligachan > Loch Brittle = 45 mins - 1 hr

BUT if you want a town then Portree has more amenities.

We stayed at Marmalade a couple of years ago and were lucky to get a large room at the top of the hotel for the same price. It's a more modern place and nicely furnished. The breakfast was good, served in the restaurant/bar and lunch/dinner was also served in the same place.

The only drawback is the hill up to the hotel from the town, which is OK if you're mobile, but likely to be a problem if you've dined or supped too well, or have trouble walking.

Rubicund, DH does have bad knees so that might be a problem.

Indy Dad, I did look up the apartments and that might be an option if things get filled up before I can make all my arrangements.

The Inn at Loch Torridon is fully booked on one of my chosen nights so I'm trying to juggle some ideas on that portion before booking Skye. Just in case I have to flip flop those 2 stays which I don't want to do.

If I recall, most of the Portree restaurants we chose were along Quay street which is slightly downhill from down.

The Skye Holiday apartments are slighlty uphill on York street (I think, that general area at least), but closer than the Marmalade if that helps.

Just curious, hopefully Portree isn't like some of the towns in Cornwall where you have to walk (no car) through certain areas?

I have, I think, just completed 2 more bookings. I had to switch the order in which I visit Loch Torridon and Skye. However, from the map it looks like mileages will be similar.

We have 3 nights at the Inn at Torridon. One of the 2 days I hope to go see the garden at Inverwe.

Then, 3 nights at the Cuillin on Skye. With both places it was the last room they had left for my dates. Whew!

No, there aren't any Italian style no traffic zones. Portree is a small town, maybe more a village.
