Islay Accommodations
We are planning an around the world trip, with our first stop in Scotland in late July. We will be spending the first 4 days in Edinburgh and then have an unplanned weekend (Friday through Sunday nights) and would like to visit the Isle of Islay.
This is our fourth visit to Scotland, but we have not included Islay in our prior visits. Could you please recommend accommodations on the island? Many thanks. |
Please can you tell me your prefered style, preferred location or preferred budget (or all three)

Hello Sheila,
Thank you for your reply. We don't have a preferred location on the Isle of Islay - honestly, we don't know enough about the island to choose one location over another. As for style, our first choice is self-catering accommodations, however, we recognize that in high season (which we believe July is), most require a week-long stay. Our second choice would be a B&B or small hotel. Our only requirement is en-suite WC and shower. With respect to budget, we would like to keep it under GBP 100 per night for a double. I have read many of your posts when planning our prior trips to Scotland, and found them to be very, very useful. Thank you for any advice you are able to give! |
I hadn't appreciated that you were talking about the end of this month. that focuses the mind.
I guess that the thriving metropolis of Bowmore is pretty central |
Blast! how did that happen? I thought that was a comma I pressed:)
I was going to say that my preference in Bowmore would be the Lochside, but it's recently beend one up and I can't find a tariff. The other one to look at in Bowmore is the Harbour which is about there for price. The Bridgend is OK too. Again I can't find a tariff, but I fear it may be dearer. The Port Charlotte is my all time favourite, with lots of advantages and only the minor disadvantage that it's off centre, and it is defintiely dearer. The Glenmachrie guest house gets a good name, and would be about half that price. Loch Gruinart House doesn't seem to have a website, but is very nice too, if a little more remote. I checked out Kilmeny Country Guest House last week, for us, and decided against, but it also lokks quite good (I think it's the sister of the Glenmachrie lady). Have a look at the local newspaper site for a list of what's on. http://www.ileach.co.uk/ |
Many thanks again, Sheila! I am certain we will enjoy this visit to Scotland equally as much as our previous visits!!
