Islands

Our first trip to Greece. We are flying into and out of Athens, and plan to spend 2 nights when we arrive and the last night before we depart. We we have 6 nights to explore the islands. Any suggestions? 3 nights at 2 islands? We would like to make it easy travel and if possible take a ferry between islands?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! We are traveling at the end of November and realize that this is not going to be a beach vacation.

Even our off-season specialist who posts on this forum doesn't go to the islands that late in the year. Were it me I would stay on the mainland, visit Nafplio and/or Delphi, and maybe take a short trip to one of the Saronic Gulf islands, e.g. Aegina. Otherwise, Crete would be a good off-season choice. Fly to Heraklion or Chania, rent a car and drive around to see the sights. You could fly into one airport and back to Athens from the other.

Sorry to say the end of November is not a great time for the islands as so much seems to close down for the season. We were on two islands in early October and some shops and restaurants were closed or very quiet then. I'd try and find islands which don't rely as much on tourism and have a reasonable local population. Rhodes might be an option. Also there won't be the same number of ferries running at that time of year. The chap who runs this website has been around forever so might be worth checking out his website for off-season ideas.

Rodos? Crete? Hydra?

You do know that in bad weather or high winds the ferries do not run?

I couldn't imagine going to any Greek island at the end of November.

When we stayed in Rodos years ago, a waiter at one of the restaurants told us he goes to live in Flushing from November to March because his restaurant closes for the season.
