island hopping with teenage kids

We will be in Greece in April for 10 days and will be in Athens for 4 of those. We would like to go to 2 islands - Crete being the first. Any suggestions for next island - Rhodes or Santorini??? We are an active family with 3 young teens that enjoys ancient cities, ruins, markets, tavernas.

Lots of choices here, and you will get lots of suggestions. I vote for Hydra and Naxos. Good luck.

Unless you're planning to fly between islands, which means a return to Athens between islands, you may not have enough time in April to cover those particular islands, as they're quite far apart and the ferries aren't operating at the frequent level they do during the summer months. Also be aware that April 19 is Greek Easter and all plane reservations and ferry ticket reservations should have been made by now or you stand a good chance of not being able to make all the connections you need. Hotels will also be full, so book ASAP.

With only six days for the islands, the second should be one easy to reach from Crete. From April 10th FlyingCat 4 begins its summer runs from Heraklion to Santorini: http://www.gtp.gr/TDirectoryDetails.asp?id=63919

That same ferry continues to Ios, Paros, and Mykonos, so those would be other possibilities. Any other island would impractible for such a short trip.
