Ischia? Stay in Naples or Sorrento
 

We are planning a trip back to Italy in November. My wife want sto go to Ischia, where her Grandparets come from. I need some suggestions. Would it be better to stay on Ischia or make day trips fro either Naples or Sorrento, If days trips are the better option which city is it better to stay in. We haven't been to Naples and only were in Sorrento on a previous trip. You advise will be greatly appreciated.

I spent 6 days on Ischia last fall and enjoyed the island very much. Even with 6 days, there was a lot we did not have time to see.

It's a lovely place, especially on the far side of the island, so stay a night or two and enjoy and relax.

..which means that I think it would be much better to stay on the island. The ferry schedule will be cut down by November and you might not even be able to do the round trip in one day.

There will be some hotels closed but there are also some that remain open all year.
Bus service is very good.

Thanks for your recommendations and the links. I will have to look at them in detail before I make a decision. So far it looks like we will spend 2 or 3 nights on Ischia.

Our family is on Ischia also. I think you should stay in Ischia. Villages like Sant Angelo will be pretty much closed at that time. If you stay on the other side of the island (the sides where the ports are, ie Casamicciola, Forio, Ischia Porto, Ischia Ponte) you will find a more hotels open.

What area is your family from? If you are looking to go to the comuni to get information, they are very helpful. We just needed to get an actual birth certificate and they were great.

You can easily take the bus all over the island. It's worth seeing Sant Angelo even if nothing is open. You can also rent a car right at the port if you choose to. At that time of the year it's easy driving.

We will be there in December for a wedding. We go once or twice a year.

I agree with previous posters that staying on Ischia is a better bet--you will be more relaxed and won't have to rush around to meet the (dwindling) ferry schedule.

You'll probably find a lot of restaurants and shops closed for the fall/winter, but you might find some ideas about what to do and where to stay here:

...one place not to miss is Punta Chiarito, which might be a nice (but pricey?) place to stay, too.

If you do decide to stay for 1 or more night on "the mainland," Sorrento is much more accessible for English speakers (it's very touristy and nice) but Naples is more interesting (more history, museums, restaurants, etc. but harder to get around). It's down to what you want: relaxation/comfort or stimulation/adventure?
