Is10 days in Hungary too long?

I am planning to stay in Budapestabout 5 days and then drive up to Tokaj and the northern area for the rest of the time. Is 5 days in each place too much?

bckay: Not really. That would allow time to take some day trips to Szentendre and up the Danube Bend to Visegrad and Esztergom. Stiop and spend some time at Eger on the way to Tokaj. Make a day trip to Sarospatak from Tokaj. Four or five ays is probably too much for Tokaj, but with the day trip to Sarospatak and your interest at Talley (sp.?), you will probably use it up. Have a great trip.

The March 2003 issue by Slow Foods had an extensive article about the Tokaj region and Tokaji - very informative.

I agree generally with joegri. Ten days in Hungary is not too much. Five days in Budapest is a good amount of time, and another five for other cities/areas would allow a feel for the rest of the country. As to how much in each city though, there might be varying views. The day trip covering what tour operators call the "Danube Bend" (Esztergom, Visegrad and Szentendre) is well worthwhile. Eger is a delightful city/area easily worth a day or two (we spent a wonderful weekend there). Heviz is another possibility, if more of a resort than sightseeing spot in my view. I'd go for five days in Budapest, five days elsewhere in the country.

I will be in Slovakia, and would like to see some of the Hungarian countryside and small towns. Does anyone have any favorite place in the northern part of Hungary, or suggestions for which roads would be the most scenic?
