Is Vesuvius worth seeing?

I am wondering what is at Mt. Vesuvius now? Is it a hard walk to the top? Is it worth the work (we have one who has trouble walking).

Yes Vesuvius is worth it. On a clear day you get a really cool view of the Bay of Naples. If you go to Pompeii and Hercleum before it's kind of a funny feeling to be standing at the top and looking into the crater to know that something so quiet looking caused such vast destruction.

There is a gravel path that goes up to the top. The path is well maintained with many switchbacks so that it is relatively gradual. There is a handrail. You can take all the time you want.

When I went I was with a group. We hired a van at Heracleum to drive us up to Vesuvius and then we walked, though you can get quite close to the top driving if I remember correctly.

Just be sure you have a jacket because there usually is a temp. change at the top.
