Folks are swimming in St Mark's Square as highest water in a decade floods the low-lying old town.

What happened to those expensive floodgates the Italian Government put in to help protect Serenissima?

The Mose project isn't completed yet. It's supposed to be finished in 2019.

Seems like that MOSE project started a few millennia ago! Read it was delayed by graft and corruption of local officials or something. I think some say it won't really work but more and more will need it the way the Artic and Antartic and glaciers are melting.

And here is a bit on the scandals that have disrupted the project - very very Italian it seems. Was supposed to cost about 1.6 billion euro now up to about 5.5 billion. Original completion date- now 2022 it says - apparently many of the gates put in can't work and need to be redone and parts sitting on shore have corroded - yes the stereotype of what to expect in Italy!

And the article says that heavy rains can flood Venice too and the gates will do little to stop it, especially Saint Mark's Square which is very prone to flooding in heavy rains - but they are currently constructing or are about to some kind of rubber girding to protect the square a bit more.

Heavy rain can (and does) cause flooding in Rome and Florence, too, but the problem specific to Venice is acqua alta, which isn't caused by rain.

Pal, we were talking about this on another travel site and the pictures in restaurants with diners eating in ankle deep water was amazing. How do the cooks manage not to be electrocuted? I saw all the trees down on cars and some water was hip deep. I Hope Percy still had a great trip. So surprised someone didn't move his lounge thread to here. I don't go there anymore but do miss certain posters.

There have been many deaths in Italy due to the weather. there is flooding and damage the length of the country, right down to Palermo where there is flooding. Portofino, amongst other places, is cut off, roads are washed out or blocked by slides, and the Stradivarius forest at Val de Fiemme has been destroyed by winds. 1 million cubic metres of forest gone.
