Is Umbria too hot for August?
I'm thinking about spending a week there mid-August and normally would be on the coast. Will it be too hot? Will there be things to do, restaurants, etc? Or will it be abandoned with all Italians vacationing at the waterfront?
Thanks for any advice!

It will be hot for sure and things will have slowed down for sure.
Where in Umbria are you thinking about going?
Nice video overview of Umbria here:

I would email the hotel where I plan to stay and ask them about the town in August, restauants etc. You can also email the restaurants on Web Vision Italy directly.

When I stayed in Montefalco, a native there told me that the valley floor really bakes, and Montefalco at least catches a breeze. I suspect for a week you can tolerate it. And what do you want to do? If my itinerary for Umbria was about seeing the Piano Grande and Assisi, and the insides of lots of churches, I'd risk it and just avoid the sun in the afternoons. But if you're talking about a thorough tour of Perugia, Spello, Spoleto and other walled hilltowns, the idea of all those steep stairs in muggy heat would give me pause.
I would expect Perugia to awfully quiet, but otherwise, Italians have vacation homes in Umbria.

I stayed here in Montefalco and would go back in a flash. It's in a working olive oil mill.

If you need air con, ask if they have it. Although they don't have a pool, I think they have arrangements with one nearby.

Webvision, thank you for the video and although I may stay at a villa, calling a hotel is a great idea.
Zeppole, thank you for your your feedback and looking up the temp...wow that is hot! Yes, I was thinking about touring the surrounding towns. Although the churches are spectacular, I probably won't plan to spend much time seeing them.
I want the Italian experience of cooking in with their great fresh ingredients, eating out, exploring the countryside and being outdoors.
