I have a week in Europe traveling alone in September -- is it feasible to travel from Vienna down to Dubrovnik? If so, what's the best way to go? And the best place to fly back from? Should I factor in time to return to Italy/Austria for a flight to the U.S.?

I'll be watching ths question to see what replies you get from those with personal experience. It's a very good question, and it sounds like a very good week-long trip.

I'm chiming in to let you know that there are $99 one way flights between Dubrovnik and London or Frankfurt on www.europebyair.com - - so this might be a factor in your overall air travel plans. And ryanair.com offers dirt cheap service between London (Stansted) and Graz - - only about an hour and a half from Vienna.

Try www.europebyair.com/. They have a $99 fare pass that will let you fly from Vienna to Dubrovnik R/T by way of Zagreb.

I didn't perceive that the goal is simply to "get" from Vienna to Dubrovnik - - I assume that will be by ground.

By the way, this thread would be far more useful if re-posted with a more informative header - - like "Seeking advice on a week-long trip between Vienna and Dubrovnik".

Wonderful Slovenia is between them. I think it would be sad if you had to just fly over Slovenia to get to Dubrovnik. Great question and one that will take a little work.

Hmm. Well for starters, you can take a train from Vienna to Ljubljana in Slovenia (a wonderful town) in about 6 hours. From there you can go to Zagreb -- somewhere I've missed but often raved about in about 2 and a half hours. There are several ways to get from Zagreb to Dubrovnik, but I believe bus is the best public transport.

You can also take a train from Vienna to Trieste, Italy and then a boat to Dubrovnik. Or rather than stopping in Trieste, you can take the train further to Zadar and take a bus or a boat from there to Dubrovnik. Some trains from Vienna to Trieste, stop in Bled in Slovenia -- one of the prettiest spots on earth in my opinion.

So there are a lot of options.

On the way to Dalmatia I could not miss a stop in the italian coastal town of Trieste (Triest), which was once the third metropolis of Austria-Hungary, it's plenty of historical buildings, with the world-famous imperial Castle of Miramare , and its literary routes (J.Joyce, Svevo and others who lived there..)

Don't miss a boat ride across the bay and the historical cable-tramway !! You'll enjoy it a lot !

Fly if you can...it's a long way from there.

I agree with Patrick...Slovenia is pretty...especially Bled. Ljubljana is a very cute town, and has a young vibe, as it's a university town.

Here is what I did...

Ljubljana to Rijeka, overnight ferry to Split. Stayed in Split, then ferry to Hvar, Hvar to Dubrovnik. You can get from Split to Dubrovnik direct by ferry I believe, or do it by bus. Either way, it would be a long trip, and if you only have a week and just want to see Vienna and Dubrovnik, I would agree with the suggestion to find a flight.

Dubrovnik is wonderful...I hope you get there.

not true -- just changed my plans because of the comments here ... will now from Vienna to Bled to Ljubljana to Piran to Trieste to Munich.
