Is this drive cutting it too close for our flight out of Zurich?

We really want to spend our last night in a hotel near Vezelay, Burgundy, France. Google Earth puts it at 4 1/2 hours to the Zurich airport. We have a 1 p.m. flight out. We have no problem leaving Vezelay at 5 a.m., which should get us to the Zurich airport to return the car and make our flight at 9:30 a.m. with 1 1/2 hours as a cushion (assuming we should be at the ticket counter at 11 a.m.)

Would you do this, or are we likely to hit terrible traffic causing us to miss our flight? By the way, Google Earth routes us through Besancon and Basel. Thanks in advance for any advice.

What happens to you if you miss the flight?

I would also check Viamichelin.com and Mappy.com.

Look the route(s) over. Any segments that are not on interstate qulaity roads might take longer than Google, viamichelin, or mappy list.

I don't know about you of course, but I'd be very nervous for about 4 1/2 hours. In fact, I'd probably be sleepless the night before worrying about the next day's 4 1/2 hours...

What day will you be driving to Zürich? Weekday? Weekend? Holiday?

I wouldn't do it because you never know how the borders will be. Lots of Grenzgängers coming from Germany into Basel in the morning.

It will be a Tuesday. According to mappy, it's a 4:50 drive. According to viamichelin, it's a 4:23 minute drive with 3:50 on motorways.

I don't know what happens if we miss the flight. Leave the following morning?

Thanks for the responses. I'm not hearing what I'd hoped to hear. Any other input would be welcome.

If you got a flight the next morning, what would the cost be? Would you have to buy walkup one-way transatlantic tickets, or just pay a change fee?

I'll have to find out, WillTravel.

However, I'm already dealing with the reality that we shouldn't chance it. Maybe the thing to do is get into Switzerland and stay somewhere enroute the night before. Any recommendations for under $100 accomodations?

Hi C,

>I don't know what happens if we miss the flight. Leave the following morning?

Only if you can buy a last-minute ticket at full price.
