Is this Amsterdam address a good choice for a 4 night stay?

My wife and I have found a small apartment for our first visit to Amsterdam.
Is the address below a good choice as a home base from which to do our tourist activities?
I can't tell from the map of Amsterdam - our concern is that it might be too far from the usual main activities for us to go back for either lunch or to grab a quick rest.

Van Hogendorpstraat, Amsterdam, North Holland 1051, Netherlands

Thank you,
LinB

It looks to be a good distance from the center, well west of the canal belt. I suppose that if the tram access is good in that location, it should be OK. Personally, I prefer to be in the Old Center or the immediate Canal Belt.

Not an Amsterdam expert here, but based on my couple visits (most recent being last summer) if you want a place that you can easily pop in and out for a rest, this is not a good location. Are you set on an apartment? Though I am a fan of apartment for longer stays, for 4 days a hotel may be a good option. We had very good luck with Priceline in Amsterdam.

I would look for one closer to the centre. It is a way out of the centre, and in an area full of (for Amsterdam) cheaper apartments.
The area used to be popular with squatters and those with an alternative lifestyle, and is now what is known as a very multi-cultural neighbourhood, dominated by social housing.
That of course doesn't per se make it a bad neighbourhood, but for such a short stay you want to be nearer the heart of things.

Go to Tripadvisor.com and check out the Netherlands forum for the threads "Bidding on a 4 star..." and "Bidding on a 5 star"... and you'll find lots of good advice and tips for using Priceline's NYOP.

See also http://www.betterbidding.com Last year prices were amazingly low... 70 dollars a night for a 4 star hotel. Prices seem to be up this year but chances are you'll do better than what you're looking at now.
