Is there are interactive map which give directions and distances by foot, instead of by car?

I would like to see how far different sites are in Paris and Rome if I am walking. When I try using Mapblast or Mapquest, I get directions and distances by car, which is rarely the shortest route in these cities. Does anyone know of a website which will give this information for walkers? Thanks.

I have been using Euroshell (www.euroshell.com) to plan some walking trips around Rome, i.e.: hotel to tour office, to American Express, Termini, etc. The only thing you need are street names, or sometimes a "place" name for starting point and destination. It gives exact directions, and you have the option like Michelin of getting point by point maps.

Software for this exists for various handheld PDAs.

Ditto for underground train routes.
