It can be done for that price, but without the coke. Cokes are running about $3-4 a glass in both London and Paris. Get tap water and try the Tale of India on New Row, blocks away from Covent Garden. Their biryani is excellent and several meals in one. They also do a good pre-theatre menu at 7 pounds.

You are right Siobhan, coke definitely isn't that expensive. I've certainly never paid more than £1.50 in a restaurant or bar, which is about the equivalent of US $2.30. The only places I could imagine coke being more than £2 is in expensive restaurants or clubs.

but if it's a 1.50 plus tax (do they charge tax in a resto?), then that is at least 3 bucks right there.

10 bucks a person is only 6 pounds. if a resto charges 1.50 for a coke, good luck finding a meal for 4.50.

ten pounds even would be tough.

WHEN YOU EAT IN A PLACE AS CHEAP AS MASALA ZONE, THE DRINKS AND STARTERS ARE EXPENSIVE AS THEY DO NOT MAKE MONEY ON THE MAIN COURSES. HOW ELSE DO THEY AFFORD WESTEND RENTS? NOT BE SELLING COKES CHEAPLY AS WELL. DRINK WATER IF YOU CAN'T AFFORD COKE. OR SAVE UP SOME MORE CASH OR BRING PACKED LUNCHES!

Hi Jamila,

I haven't been yet (I'm going in January), but some websites that I have found helpful for looking into restaurants are:

www.londoneats.com (you can search by type of cuisine)
www.squaremeal.co.uk (by price and type of cuisine), and
www.londontouristboard.com (click on the "worldwide cuisine" link.

Hope this helps!
Karen

Not sure of the names but there is a place in Great Queen St in Covent Garden (opposite Masonic Hall) that does a pre theatre menu.

There is another about 100 yards further on in Drury LAne (next to Oxfam shop) which is also pretty reasonable. You are still pushing it a bit to get fed for $10 (about £7) in central London.

If you are prepared to go to Drummond St NW1 (by Euston station) you will get loads of (vegetarian) food for your budget. Lovely food, dodgy area though.

And just to add to the above caveat "paki" is as rude as any racial epithet. Don't use it if you don't wish to seriously offend.

Incidentally most "Indian" restaurants are actually BAngladeshi.

Tho its not 'really' in Central London, the Lahore Kebab House will certainly fit your bill for inexpensive yet fine Indian food....
It's in Whitechapel and is a tube ride away from the west end....(with perhaps a cab on the last portion)...but returning by cab is easy and relatively inexpensive..
Hope this is of help....Best wishes.

Ben - I sent an email back to you...but for the benefit of others here, the simple reason is my "lack" of a cycle, and the fact that from Lahore Kebab at or near midnite, I was more comfortable cabbing than walking. Not a "bad" area, but perhaps more light "industrial" than I'd feel comfortable walking many blocks in late at nite.
Best wishes.

For Ben; Re Drummond St

I too used to be a regular in Drummond St (I liked the Ravi Shankar as I'm not too partial to bhel poori). I used to work on the Regents Park Estate (Roberts St) for CAmden Council and Drummond St and Regents park were always our dodgiest estates. There is a lot of gang fighting between the estates (which are divided on racial lines)and "innocent" people can get caught up in it. The Richard Everett Murder was simply an extreme example.

It is also part of the Kings Cross/Euston Rd/ Maiden lane/ Somers town area with all the problems that come with that.

I note that the rough guide to London specifically warns against the area, which is over reacting in my opinion.

It's not that bad, but it's far from good.
