Is there a direct train going from Venice to salzburg?
 

As a young girl I was fascinated with The Sound Of Music so I would love to go to Salzburg this winter after my trip to Venice. I would like to go by train but prefer a direct train because I will have lugagge.

Yes...I took it last year. It was quite long, about 6 hours, no dining car.<BR><BR>The scenery, esp. going through the alps, is quite spectacular though.<BR><BR>Go in the daytime.<BR><BR>Oh, and of course 1st Class. <BR><BR>CoachBoy

I am unable to find a direct train, i.e. no changes, from Venice to Salzburg. The best you can do as I see it is to leave Venezia Santa Lucia station at 13:14 and change in Villach at 16:07 to a train that leaves at 16:12 and arrives in Salzburg at 18:48.<BR><BR>The connection should not be too bad because the trains are on neighboring tracks, i.e. the train from Venice comes in on Gleis 4 and you leave for Salzburg from Gleis 5.<BR><BR>How much luggage do you have? I am 70 and jump on and off trains in Europe with an overnight bag and a 26" suitcase.<BR><BR>I also hope you are not disappointed in a Sound of Money [sic] tour. I took one and thought it the most egregious ripoff since Ghengis Kahn sacked Tashkent.<BR><BR>Most of the scenes in which the movie was filmed don't really exist or they are not open to the public. The famous gazebo where Lisrl and that postboy chased each other around sits abandoned somewhere on the grounds of Schloss Heilbrunn where the Austrians could care less. It wasn't much to start with and has not improved with age. And the "escape to Switzerland" is a figment of the movie makers dreamworld; they conveniently moved the Swiss border 100 miles due east. Climb a mountain west from Salzburg and you are in Germany!!<BR><BR>And the tour itself was long harangue of a commercial for this restaurant, that Bierstube, and Mrs. Brown's strudel, of which we had no time to eat in St. Gilgen. And the stop in Mondsee had one purpose: Buy something at the shops. I wonder how much kickback the Gray Line got for that litle useless pause?<BR><BR><BR><BR>Sorry to sound cynical, but that tour makes a mint off of gullible Americans seeking nostalgia. There are better things to do in Salzburg. <BR>
