Is there a cheap(er) way to get to Scandanavia?
Still trying to help plan a trip for my 60yo dh and 20yo ds- son would really like to see Scandanavia, but the flights from the US are quite high. Any suggestions on approaches via europe or elsewhere (trrains, planes, ferries, etc) that would be practical and lower the cost? Thanks.

We flew into Hamburg once and into Amsterdam a couple times, rented a car, explored Northern Germany, then Schleswig (Denmark), over to Copenhagen, then on to Southern Sweden. Being of Scandie heritage myself I've always wanted to see more of Sweden and Norway, but the prices have scared me off for the past 40 years.
After watching The Amazing Race in Estonia I'm thinking that may be an affordable option. Perhaps there are some deals into that area since it's under-touristed. From there you could use ferries to head North.
Last suggestion, check out the cheapo airlines flying out of England and Germany to some of the smaller Scandanavian destinations. Perhaps you could get a good deal to London or Frankfurt then use Easyjet or Ryanair or GermanWings to fly North. Check out this site for help with the budget airlines:

You may want to look at my trip reports from last summer that give the prices we paid. Just click on my name to find them. Our RT costs from SF to Europe are given in the French section of the trip.

If you're looking at fares for next summer, most of them I've seen are high - to anywhere in Europe. If the airlines are going to have any sales, it won't be for another month or so when they have a better idea of anticipated traffic.
We have several friends who are native Swedes and return at least once a year from the States. They swear they consistently get the best deals on CO to ARN connecting in EWR.
Hope this helps.

Very soon I will be agonizing over the flight from San Francisco to Copenhagen in August
Continental may be cheaper, agree with others, a few years ago I flew to Zurich, CO was not only the cheapest but also had better schedule.
Ilana, when are you going? Sign up with travelzoo and orbitz for e-mails. Today I got the weekly travelzoo, Lufthansa is on sale, but the flight is winter, may be spring? not sure

Buy a Volvo for factory delivery and they'll throw in two tickets from N. America to Goteborg.
