Is the Trip Really Worth it¿?
 

My wife and I just booked an all inclusive Amalfi Coast & Tuscany trip with Grand Circle Travel and an additional 3 day extension in Rome. Unfortunately the only date open was Feb 20, 2001. Considering the weather (questionable); places open that time of the year (again questionable)we were wondering if it is REALLY worth it? We are history buffs and know there is a lot to see and do in Italy, just worried about this time of year. Any comment from anyone who has been there and done that during Feb would be most appreciated. Thanks in Advance.

Brad, I can't speak to the Tuscany portion of the trip but we spent two weeks in the Amalfi coast and Rome in late February 1999. Even given the fact that 1999 was a "La Nina" year (meaning more rainfall; lower temperatures) the weather was fine. The warmest temperature was 70 degrees F (although it was much colder at night) and we had a mix of rain and sun. Overall, the weather wasn't a barrier to enjoying the area. As far as things being closed....the most notable was some restaurants. But there were plenty of great restaurants that were open, so it was no big loss. On the plus side, there were few tourists, nothing was crowded and we had plenty of opportunities to meet and speak with local residents which really enhanced our visit. Hope this helps. <BR> <BR>

We have not done that specific region in February, but I can tell you that we enjoy Europe in the winter time almost as well as summer. You give up the longer days and gain the fact that the crowds of people are gone with all the busses and hassles. The restaurants are more "European" because they are not filled with Americans. February should be great in the southern area. Trust me: We were in Florence three weeks ago. It looked like the entire town had been invaded by white tennis shoes and baseball hats! Lines everywhere. Do the trip as planned and if you do go back in the hot months you will know what I mean.

We did Europe in January and loved it. No crowds, didn't have to reserve seats on trains, etc. It was freezing, but that too was fine because you don't get your energy drained by the heat of summer. The only problem was that all buildings, shops, museums, etc. were so over heated and you had to strip down the layers of clothes every time you went indoors. I would go back in winter. Have a great trip : )

I have just done my first trip to europe in the summer. the only season i haven't done there now is spring. anyway, i would agree that any other season is better because of the heat and the crowds!!!

I have never gotten rained on or cold in a museum or church. It is soooo magnificent, it does not matter when you go-just go!
