Is the Milan Train station right in Milan
We will be flying into Milan Malapensa staying overnight in Milan then taking the train to Venice.
1) how far is the airport to downtown Milan? 2) is there a train from the airport to downtown Milan? 3) is the train station from Milan to Venice right in Milan or in the outskirts? 4) what is there to do in Milan besides from the Last Supper? 5) do I need to book tickets to the last supper if I am going in October? Thanks Michelle |
Yes, Milano Centrale is "in" Milan. I suppose some would say it is "downtown."
There is a rail link from Malpensa to the city but that rail link does not take you to Centrale, but rather to theCadorna and Bovisa rail stations. There is a shuttle bus which takes you into the city to Centrale. Here's a link for the latter: http://www.malpensashuttle.it/e-orari.htm Centrale would be your best bet for taking a train on to Venice. |
Two real treats in Milano:
The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele is one of the world's first covered shopping arcardes. Beautiful, great shopping, even good food. The Duomo is one of the largest churches in the world, and architecutrally unforgettable. Go to the roof if you can. See today's "36 hrs" piece from the NY Times for further ideas: http://travel.nytimes.com/2007/06/17...amp;ei=5087%0A |
By train, the trip from Malpensa to Milano Centrale is 45 minutes.
|
But there is not a train from Malpensa to Centrale. Read Dukey's post of 9:46am. Enjoy Milan mnatella and all of your time in Italy.
|
Centrale is 4 subway stops north of the Duomo. Like Dukey says, it's definitely still in Milan. Just not right in the center center.
|
A couple of years ago we actually took the Metro from centrale to see the Duomo and the Galleria, etc. Very enjoyable.

Your solution is to take the train from Malpensa airport to whichever station (Cadorna or Bovisa) is most convenient to your hotel. The next day you'll go from your hotel to Centrale for the Venice train. Fantastico!
Knowing this may help you choose your hotel. |
Hi
My wife and I did Milan and Venice a couple of years back. We took the bus from Malpensa to the train station and from there we took the subway to get to e.g. the Duomo. Here is my trip report with pictures and links: http://gardkarlsen.com/italy_milan.htm . Maybe you can find some useful information there.
