I will be in Paris an extra 2 nights on my vacation and would like to try a different area and type of hotel than the Claude Bernard which we'll happily be staying at for 5 nights. I'm looking at the Duquesne Eiffel - want a view of the Eiffel Tower - but am wondering if it is near any shops and boulangeries for breakfast. it's not as close to Rue Cler as I originally thought. Can anyone tell me if we need to plan to eat at the hotel (which I prefer not to do)? Any other shops nearby? Everyone was so helpful in advice to help us find the Claude Bernard - can you help with this too?! Thanks so much once again.

yes, of course, it is but I think you don't understand where it is. It is very near rue Cler, but that is part of what I am considering close by. I think it is about two short blocks. There are other cafes nearby where you can eat, also, rather than boulangeries in particular. I often go farther than that for breakfast as I might pick something on the way to the metro stop I'm using. I like the Cafe Source around the Latour Maubourg metro stop.

Boulangeries are not usually places where you can eat breakfast--they are bakeries, but you can buy things there.

kwren - I just returned Monday from a week in Paris and stayed at Ave Rapp and Bourdonnais. Not very far from where you will be staying at all. There are many cafes in that area, if you go down La Motte Piquet you are only a couple blocks from Rue Cler. Rue St. Domonique has tons of Patisseries and Boulangeries as well as other shops. The restaunts in the area are wonderful, Cafe Constant and the Fountain de Mars although for a real treat stop into Chez Agnes. She is a trip. Anyway - you can't go wrong staying in that area, enjoy.

I stay often at the Hôtel Duquesne. It's two blocks to the Place Ecole Militaire and one more block to rue Cler. There's a nice boulangerie a block up avenue Bosquet from the Place Ecole Militaire and loads of cafes and other shops all over the area.

Sorry, I did mean to pick up goodies at the boulangerie, not sit down for breakfast there. Of course, by the time I decide what to buy, I will have passed quite a bit of time in front of the counter!!! I do like the idea of going to the cafes that are mentioned though - that way we can stop at the boulangeries (and/or patisseries) for a snack. We'll certainly give them a try!

I did read that many of the shops on Rue Cler close in August. I imagine that enough will be open to make a trip over worthwhile. Think of how many Steve Ricks books there will be in the few remaining open shops.
