Is the area call Born a safe area?

I am taking my daughter to Barcelona in July for two weeks. It is her graduation from college. I have read and heard about the pick pockets and muggings and will heed the advice, but what would be considered one of the more safe places for two women to stay. My daughter is fluent in Spanish. I have been to Southern Spain and never had any bad circumstances, and found the people very welcoming. Any advice would help. We would like to stay in an apartment as we will be there for two weeks. Thanks.

read all the threads here on that.. it has all been hashed over again and again.. be careful, be aware of your surroundings and enjoy your stay.

what you have heard is true.. but doesn´t happen to everybody.

i have been to barcelona tons of times and never had a problem but have witnessed the guys at work.

they are incredible.

I stayed with my daughters in the Born district when they were 13 and 15. We had a small apartment in a little calle just off the pedestrian street Argentaria, and via a maze of other alleys/narrow streets we were 2 minutes from the Picasso museum.

We felt perfectly safe there though we weren't out very late at night, and the girls went off to a nearby internet cafe each day by themselves.

With regard to pickpockets, being aware is your best defence.

Barcelone is a wonderful city - I hope you have a wonderful time.

PLEASE believe me when I assure you that I also believe Barcelona is, on the whole, a very safe place to visit.

I was pickpocketed there once, on the Metro, and that was on a day when i was being VERY "aware" but was not wearing a moneybelt.

I agree that awareness is essential but it is sometimes not totally adequate.

Please do not think you will need to go out and about in fear because you won't. But please protect your valuables accordingly.

Same as Dukey; we were pickpocketed on the metro. The only place in the world this ever happened to us. It's still a wonderful city, but don't carry too many valuables, and keep copies and important phone numbers to call in your hotelroom, so you won't waste too much time if you need to cancel cards etc.
