Is Termini are safe??

Hello,

I've booked a room at the Hotel Romae, just a few blocks from Termini. Has anyone stayed here? The reviews on venere.com say this is a great place to stay for what it costs, but I never know if those reviews are "plants" to entice you into booking. I'm also wondering about staying in the Termini area. I've heard some say it was perfectly safe, others not so much.

I have a couple reasons for wanting to stay near Termini, one being that we are taking a day trip to Florence, and our train gets back to Rome TE at 12:30am. Seems it'd be great to have the hotel right there, but I'd also like to make it there without being killed or mugged.

I welcome any info... but hurry, I arrive in Rome 9 days from today. Woohoo!

Hi,
I stayed at the Hotel Des Artistes in that same area 3 years ago. We loved the Des Artistes! I also read at that time that the Termini was a bad area. We really liked being in that area. Having the Termini so close is helpful. When my 12 year old just needed a piece of home at the end of a long trip McDonalds was there. Along with other places to eat, to shop and a grocery. There is also a medical clinic there that was very helpful when my sister had some unknown rash! We also went to Florence and it was great having the station right there(well 3-4 blocks). It was somewhat of a seedy area. My sister and I and my daughter just walked with a purpose and we were fine. Frankly, I have been more freaked out in San Francisco. There are some nice little places to eat a block or two from the Termini. When we go back we will stay at the same place. Our room was a triple and it was a nice size with a nice bathroom. There was free internet and a wonderful rooftop garden to relax in. Have a wonderful time. I can't wait to go back. But Ireland is next on my list!

I personally think that that area is fine and very convenient to do daytrips from Rome. There are quite a few really decent 3 star hotel "fines" within 3-5 blocks of it too.As the above poster said-be aware of everything and everyone around you especially when you are using the ATM machines or hauling out your wallets for train tickets(as you would anywhere you go these days).I was just at Victoria train station in London last night and feel like Termini is quite similar. Before I started flying to Rome every week, I used to hear the horror stories of Termini with all the stealing, etc. I was VERY surprised the first time I arrived there as I expected some dirty dark horrible train station (think Naples?). There are little stores all over the place and lots of police, etc. There is one side street area outside of Termini that is more low low rent hostel type places but seriously, its only two blocks from Piazza Republicca area which has one of the most expensive hotels around.Go and enjoy your hotel and laugh about the money you are saving for a really great meal with great wine instead!!!

I feel that the station area is fine.

Now in Naples I would say no way.

I've stayed at least 3 times near Termini and I felt safe.

hester, I'm curious about the rash. Did they give you an answer? I have the same problem in Italy and I've discovered, without visiting a doctor, that it has to be the mineral water. I'm not sure which mineral it is, I just know that I can't guzzle water there like I do here otherwise I get these little bumps all over me.

Thank you all so much for your input. Has anyone actually stayed at the Hotel Romae? Seems nice enough, but pictures (i.e. on their website) can often be misleading. Just curious, no biggie.

Again, thanks to all who replied.

I always stay at the Hotel Canada which is just down the street from your choice. The neighborhood is fine, there is absolutely no more danger there than anyplace else you might go.
Personally, I love the area; it is not overwhelmed with tourist types and is very quiet at night.

As far as Venere comments go I've never been given a reason to doubt the accuracy or sincerity of them. I know that they've posted mine verbatim; they verify your email before they post them. It would be possible to plant reviews to lure people into booking but would really be a pain in the neck to do so.

I think you can figure if the reviews sound like the sort of place you will enjoy, that you probably will.

My boyfriend and I just got back from Italy. We stayed at Hotel Orlanda by the termini. We both loved being close to the termini and it seemed pretty safe to us. We are both from Los Angeles so that may have something to do with it. At first when we arrived we were lost in a not so great area of town. We were comforted upon finding our hotel to be in a much nicer area. We really enjoyed our hotel so if you are unsure about the one you booked.... you can check it out. http://www.hotelorlanda.com/index_eng.htm

I did post a response on TripAdvisor.com but it has not been processed yet. It was my boyfriend's favorite hotel up until our upgrade in venice of a canal view. Although he still seemed to enjoy the hotel in rome.
