Is Stonehenge a Must Visit?
 

We only have 4 days in London. My husband & I would like to visit Stonehenge but we are not sure if we should take the time away from our all to brief London Visit.
What do you think?

Is it your first visit to London? If so, I think the general consensus would be to concentrate just on London - but if you are REALLY interested, then it is your trip after all! Have fun!

We leave in two weeks, getting VERY excited now!

I've been to London several times, including Stonehenge. My husband has also been to the city but that was 10 years ago. And, you are right...there really are no right or wrong things to do. It's holiday time.

Do want to visit it more than visiting every itszy bitzy little corner of London? If the answer is yes then go for it

JonJon - I don't think 4 days would be enough time for anyone to visit every "itszy bitzy little corner of London" - 4 days probably wouldn't enable her to visit all of the major museums!

If you have never been to London and England before, then I'll say "no", unless there's something about Stonehenge that intrigues you. There are plenty of day trips you can take from London that are more interesting - Cambridge, Oxford, Bath, etc.

But a day trip to Bath can easily include a side-trip to Stonehenge. In fact, it might help justify the trip, since otherwise you're spending most of the day getting to and from a destination where you'll spend less than an hour.

For true Stonehenge/Neolithic fans, look into the Astral Travels "Inner Circle" tour, which visits the stones before or after their regular visiting hours so you can go beyond the fence. This tour includes hours of jaunting about the lovely English countryside, visiting other ancient sites (West Kennet, Avebury, etc.), checking out the latest crop circles (later in summer). The schedule is such that you get to either sleep in (if you're going on the after-hours visit) or get back to London in time to do something else in the evening.

Four days is not enough to even get a taste of London, but likewise it would be too bad to visit ONLY London.

With 4 days in London, unless you have been before, I wouldn't take the time away for Stonehenge. I have always found Stonehenge fascinating to read about but was slightly disappointed in our visit there. London is a wonderful place with more things to do than you could possibly do in 4 days or twice that amount of time.

Stonehenge is definitely a must visit but only after London and when you have some time to spend in the countryside around Salisbury and Winchester. Save it for a more leisurely visit.

Short answer...No. With only four days in London,save it for your next trip.

I had heard that because Stonehenge is so close to the motorway, the noise from all the traffic was interfering with the visitors' 'spiritual' experience and so plans were underway to sink that part of the motorway closest to the site through an underground tunnel. Can anyone confirm if this is true and if so, whether construction has begun ?
