Is renting a car necessary for a three day stay in Normandy?

Our base will be Bayeux, and we'd like to do the standard sites - one DDay tour, see the tapestry, etc. Thanks.

A car is probably not necessary. You can easily walk around Bayeux to see all of the town, it is small. You can get a guided tour of the WWII sights. However, Normandy is lovely and you may want a car just to enjoy the countryside. How do you plan to get to and from Bayeux?

We will take the train to and from Paris.

A car is always a great advantage, IMO, because you can wander to places that public transport won't take you, and you can manage your sightseeing at your own pace. That said, it's certainly possible to see the main sites of that part of Normandy by taking tours.

We were in Normandy earlier this month, basing ourselves in Bayeux. You could easily stay there without a car. We parked ours when we arrived and didn't get back in it until we were ready to leave. Our guide Roel Klinkhamer, for the DDay tour was awesome and knowledgeable. We could have never driven around and understood all the info he gave us on our own.
