Rembrandtplein is nowhere near the red light district. If you'll look at your map, find Centraalstation and Damrak.
A few blocks down from Centraalstation you'll find Oude Kerk to the right (east) of Damrak. The red light district surrounds Oude Kerk for a few blocks in every direction.

Rex, Thanks for your help! I did not want to stay in or near the "Red Light Dist".

It's still pretty lively (by dutch standards, ie quiet for wiltshire) it is the equivelent of the "west end" in london, ie night clubs and late bars, but the coffee-shop and redlight scene isn't there.

The Milkweg is legendary.

This probably won't add much to your knowledge of Rembrandtplein, but we spent a week at one of the shabby hotels there in the early 1990s and to quote TimeOut, "...the area does remain unashamedly, unconscionably, unbearably tacky." It has a reputation as party central, although it was quiet in November. I found it a handy location for me to get to the conference at the RAI and for my wife to get to the tourist sites. There are a number of gay establishments on streets leading off the square, so that the explicit displays in the windows of the porn shoppes tend to be more homo than hetero in nature, if that bothers you.
