Is Plitvice worth the effort from Dubrovnik?

Hi everyone! I'm super excited, having just booked flights for a 10 night trip to Croatia, flying in and out of Dubrovnik. Right now, we're planning on spending 4 nights in Dubrovnik and then making the trek up to Plitvice for 1 night before coming back down to the coast near Trogir and moving our way back down (Trogir, Split, Hvar, Brac, and/or Korcula) before flying back out of Croatia through the Dubrovnik airport. Neither my husband nor I drive stick shift, and it seems automatic car rentals are both scarce and insanely expensive (between $300 and $400 for just 2 days!!! and that's without gas costs!) -- so we are considering taking the bus from Dubrovnik to Plitvice and then busing back out to Split or flying to Zagreb and then busing from there to Plitvice. Either of those latter options are going to require lots of travel time/a bit of a hectic itinerary (and I've read about others' difficulties getting the bus out of Plitvice). My question is -- I know everyone says Plitvice is incredible - but is it worth this travel time/hassle for just one night/1.5 days? It would be great to hear your thoughts!

Thanks in advance!!
All of your posts have been so helpful in my planning already (as a lurker thus far )

Yes, it is worth it. Incredible nature all around, just beautiful. I'd fly to Zagreb and go to Plitvice from there ,it seems an easier option than going from Dubrovnik and back.

thanks teddybear -- that's kinda what I was thinking too. I'm still holding out that we'll find a more reasonable car rental too - that would make it a lot less hectic of a trip. People's pictures look beautiful, so I really don't want to miss it. I'm going to show your response to my husband and see if I can convince him!

Google for Lex Barker, Steward Granger and Pierre Briece and their western movies. Rent a movie, if possible. That's where you're going.

Yes, it is worth it. But can't you find someone to teach you to drive a stick shift before you leave? It's not that difficult; I taught all three of my teenagers in a week or two.

This "can't drive stick" is just ridiculous. Just learn it, it doesn't matter what age you are. It's not only worth every penny, but also teaches you some basic things about how to coordinate your hands and legs. People can play the piano, you can learn how to drive a car! Listen to the engine..., it is in fact easy.

thanks -- I know the stick shift thing is pathetic, but we live in Manhattan ... so no ready opportunities to learn sadly -- no one around with cars let alone manual transmissions!

but we'll figure something out... sounds like we have to get to Plitvice.

wow - those car prices blow my mind. We are paying US 263 for one week - renting in Dubrovnik and dropping at Split, for a standard of course.

Good Luck on your search for a less expensive auto!
