Is Paris in early January as depressing as Milan in early January??

Is Paris in early January as depressing as Milan in early January??
In early January 2004, my husband and I were in Milan. While many boutiques were open for business, we found the nightlife rather depressing. It definitely seemed "abandoned" by the locals. Can we pretty much expect the same for Paris in early January? Or is Paris more like NYC, with a lot happening all the time?

I was in Paris for 3 days late in January, 2003. We flew there to see an exhibit on Edith Piaf and stayed in the Eiffel Tower area.
It rained most of the time so that was a bit inconvenient but I did not find it depressing. The worst part was being forced to endure all the smoking in every restaurant. I hate smoke. In the nicer weather you can sit outside and avoid a lot of it.

what kind of nightlife are you thinking of?
If you're thinking about ballet or concerts or theatre or cabarets, those will be going on in January--you just have to check the listings.
Even New York (where I live) is a little less party-central in January--as in most places, there's a bit of a drop-off in attendance when the holidays are just over. Theatres offer discounts. Days are short, and cold. But the events are there to be attended.

Elaine: I'm from NYC too! I guess what I mean about nightlife was that in Milan in early January, most "natives" were not around, so the dance clubs (with DJs, etc) were not as fun. I'm not so interested in seeing traditional opera or theatre in Paris...more about going dancing and seeing smaller-scale French cabaret places.

Paris is never depressing. I have been there at all times of the year and, while I prefer the spring and fall, anytime is wonderful. Lots to do and see in Paris. If you are a shopper, the stores are open and the windows are wonderful for window shopping. I'm not sure what you mean by nightlife but we have always found things to do.
