Another phrase, the one I use is
"Lasciami (pronounced lasha mee) da sola!" (or solo if you're a male).
It means, "leave me alone!", and it's good to use forceful body language to go with this, as the Italians do...

I find it amazing that so many people seem to live in glass houses. As to the sex--you can find that happening anywhere--happens to be your hubby ran into it. As to the DANGER-- Now can you say you do not think there is any danger--seediness or dirt in NYC and BROOKLYN--DC and ANY other METRO city--only reason you think Naples is worse is because you were in unfamiliar turf. Regardless of where one travels--you should be aware--not single yourselves out--stay with the crowd and get with the flow--Doesn't matter if it is Naples or around the corner from you--Not fare to give such a nice place a bad rap.

I first visited Naples in 1976 to work there for three months. Pick-pockets and purse-snatchers on motor scooters were a problem for tourists and locals alike even then in a way that they were not anywhere else in Italy. I visit every three or four years and there's no doubt the place has gone downhill. There seem to be more gypsy gangs, Kosovo Albanians still cannot be deported so they know no fear as far as the police go, and youth gangs are definitely more agressive than they were. As mentioned above, a Sunday morning is a great time for a stroll but there's only one Sunday morning per week. The museum and the national library (the main reason for my visits) are atypical islands of tranquility, while most public areas are not really safe. There are too many crooks trying the relieve you of your money and your gear. There are pickpockets in the public transport in Rome and crowded boats in Venice, but the level and ubiquity of petty theft in Naples is an order of magnitude higher. I don't think anyone who lives there would deny that.

You gotta be kidding. I've been going to Naples at least once a year for the past seventeen years, and I have NEVER had any problems. Going there often, with the absence of problems must indicate some sort of security. You are just as safe in Naples as you would be in any other large city, as a matter of fact safer than you would be in DC, where flying bullets seem to find many innocent bystanders.

I love Naples, after just three days there, and I plan to go back. Sure it is chaotic, but the art, the churches, the food, and the general ambience of the city are fabulous. One must certainly watch one's step, but, hey, it is a European city in the 21st century. And I certainly would never pass judgement on a city after passing through its train station, but I agree that the Naples station isn't very pleasant. They do have a waiting room reserved for those with inter-city tickets, which can take the edge off. But do someday explore Naples. There is nowhere like it.
