Is my Croatia schedule overload??

Hello All,

Please let me know if the following is doable or is there too much driving involved?:

May 26th: Arrive into Dubrovnik airport at 1pm. Rent a car. Night in Dubrovik

May 27th: Whole day Dubrovnik

May 28th: Drive to Sarajevo with lunch at Mostar (Night in sarajevo)

May 29th: Whole day sarajevo.

May 30th: Drive early from Sarajevo to Split. Night in Split

May 31st: Whole day in Split

1st June: Drive from Split to Hvar (with ferry). Night in Hvar

2nd June: depart Havar for Zadar. Night in Zadar.

3rd June: whole day Zadar

4th June: zadar to plitvice. night in plitvice

5th June: Plitvice to Zagreb. Night in Zabreb.

6th June: fly out from Zagreb.

All I am concerned about is the driving times and distance...don't want to be driving all day long...

It seems the ferry may be expensive from Split to Stari Grad...Anyone know the rates?

Any help very greatly appreciated.

Thanks a bunch!

Dear Bella,

Thanks for the response. I am planning on taking out Hvar and adding one more day to Zadar so I can see some National Park which is apparently close by.

I also might skip Sarajevo because of the distance involved.

Any other further ideas or help greatly appreciated.

Thanks !!

In my opinion, way too much driving. The roads in Croatia are mostly costal or through the mountains. They are in good condition but are all two lanes. It will be difficult to enjoy the scenery while driving. Also, the Bosnia and Herzegovina border crossing is no wave through. It can take a considerable amount of time. If you had two or three weeks, driving would be fine.

I recommend cutting back on your itinerary and abandoning the driving idea. A car is useless in Dubrovnik, Hvar Town and Plitvice Jerza. The buses in Croatia are very comfortable, clean, and inexpensive. As well as taking in the scenery, which is spectacular) you can eat your meals on the buses and plan you time in your destination.

If I had ten days this is the itinerary I would use to maximize my time in the best places.

May 26th: Arrive into Dubrovnik airport at 1pm. Taxi to hotel. Night in Dubrovnik.

May 27th: Whole day Dubrovnik. Night in Dubrovnik

May 28th: : Whole day Dubrovnik & Lokrum Island. Night in Dubrovnik

May 29th: Bus to Mostar (08:00-11:40). Night in Mostar

May 30th: Bus to Split (12:15-18:00) . Night in Split

May 31st: Whole day in Split

1st June: Ferry from Split to Hvar (10:30-11:35). Night in Hvar Town

2nd June: Whole day in Hvar. Night in Hvar Town

3rd June: Early morning ferry to Split (06:25-07:40) then bus to Plitvice Jereza (08:30-12:45). Night in Plitvice Jereza.

4th June: Whole day in Plitvice Jereza. Night in Plitvice Jereza.

5th June: Plitvice to Zagreb (12:45-15:10). Night in Zabreb.

6th June: fly out from Zagreb.

By the way, flying into the Dubrovnik airport is very beautiful. We have done it twice. We have also taken all of the buses mentioned above.

Have a great trip whatever you decide!

The drive from Dubrovnik to Sarejevo via Mostar would be windy and long . You are also crossing into BiH so you have passport stops .
Sarejevo for me is a must see- car definitely not needed in Dubrovnik.

I have driven from Split to Sarajevo and back, also to Mostar from both Split and Dubrovnik.

If you click on my name and scroll down through my topics, I've written several trip reports about my visits to Bosnia & Herzegovina, with a fair bit of information about the roads, routes to take (or not!), driving times, and the scenery en route. Probably the one of most relevance to you is this one...

However I think with your time constraints you will either have to cut Sarajevo or Hvar or Zadar from your trip, and it will still be rushed.

"May 26th: Arrive into Dubrovnik airport at 1pm. Rent a car. " As others have noted, at this point in your trip, a car might well be a liability, not an asset. And I must admit that I don't like driving after a long flight -- its more of a risk than I choose to undertake.

"lunch at Mostar" -- Are you planning to simply eat lunch and move on? That is, of course, a perfectly legitimate choice, but I found much to enjoy in Mostar, and thought it especially engaging in the evening, after day trippers left.

"May 29th: Whole day sarajevo" -- With only one day in Sarajevo, you will need to be VERY selective in what you see / experience. I would urge you to think through your priorities in advance so you can take advantage of this very limited time frame.

"May 31st: Whole day in Split" -- depending on your interests, that could be enough, or not enough. If you haven't already done so, I encourage you to think through what YOU want to see / do / experience.

"1st June: Drive from Split to Hvar (with ferry): -- Are you sure you want to deal with a car? Could be a good option, but maybe not....

"5th June: Plitvice to Zagreb. Night in Zabreb. ... 6th June: fly out from Zagreb." I take it you aren't interested in visiting Zagreb? Not everyone likes it, but I found much to enjoy there.

"All I am concerned about is the driving times and distance...don't want to be driving all day long..." -- Then give some thought to using Croatia's very comfortable and convenient busses.

"I am planning on taking out Hvar and adding one more day to Zadar so I can see some National Park which is apparently close by." Do you mean Krka National Park? I loved that park -- but there are enough similarities to the Plitvice Lakes National Park that you might not want to give up some of your VERY limited time for it. It is certainly lovely, and sufficiently different from the Plitvice Lakes that I can understand the appeal -- it just a question of what you would give up to make time for it. (And to be clear, IMO, if you have time for only one of these parks, the Plitvice Lakes NP is the single most unskippable site in ALL of stunningly glorious Croatia.) Again -- your call based on your priorities for what you want to see and what you are willing to sacrifice to support those aspirations.

"I also might skip Sarajevo because of the distance involved." Your call. IMO, Sarajevo is well worth seeing, but you do NOT have time for everything worth seeing in the area. You ARE going to have to make some tough decisions.

BTW, of the half-dozen guidebooks I used to plan my time in the area, I found the Rough Guide the best BY FAR.

The good news: ALL of these places are worth seeing (at least IMO), so you don't have a bad option.

It's a spectacularly beautiful part of the world, and you're planning to visit it at time that can be glorious -- enjoy!

It's feasible, but a lot of driving (as said above). I would stay at Sibenik instead of Zadar and visit the Krka Falls Park.

May be you skip Sarajevo and do Dubrovnik - Mostar - Split or you skip Mostar too and drive from Dubrovnik to Korcula - Vela Luka - car ferry - Split.

Bosnian roads are terrible. Croatian roads are excellent. Plus the length of driving to Sarajevo is not small...
