Is Luxembourg expensive?
 

Hiya! I'm travelling to Luxembourg in November (from the UK), but I've since booking I've been told it's a very expensive place to visit, so I'm worrying a bit now as I like to explore places on a budget! How expensive are we talking? What is the average price of a meal, drink, bus etc?

I am of the personal belief that "expensive" is more about how you choose to manage your trip - where you stay, where you eat, what you do, than about a specific destination. I can travel on the relative "cheap" most anywhere.

Price in supermarket is reasonable, maybe a little higher than in UK but not by much. Alcohol is quite cheap, as taxes are lower. Brexit fears have slashed the value of sterling by 10% against the euro since June, so further decline by the time you travel may be possible. Sit-down meal will be expensive, as wages are higher. Look out for special offers, esp for lunches and in chain restaurants. English is quite widely spoken.

What do you spend money on? When I visited in 2013, when the Euro was much stronger than it is today, I didn't think Luxembourg City seemed expensive at all - based on meals, hotel, etc. A day pass for public transit for the whole (little) country wasn't very expensive, either.

You can certainly price out hotels for example and see what they cost.

Now Zurich? Different story...

Apart from the pound, we Belgians find the Duchy of Luxembourg more expensive than our homeland.

Houses are more expensive for instance, but you won't be buying real estate, will you ?

So just stick to cheap optoins and it will be fine.

suze, what is your personal experience of Luxembourg?

We just returned from Luxembourg and we didn't find it to be terribly expensive. We spent our whole time in Luxembourg City and ate many meals in various restaurants and they were not out of line with other cities in Europe. There are many upscale shops in Luxembourg City so you can spend some money but they are the same shops that are in other big cities and I thought the prices were not terrible. We were in Scandinavia after Luxembourg and that was much more expensive than Luxembourg.

Thank you so much for all of your responses, I really appreciate it. :-) It sounds as if prices of many things are very slightly higher than the UK, and post-Brexit exchange rates are unfavourable, but as long as I'm sensible it should be okay. I like the point suze makes about budget travel being about sensible spending.

What are the must-see sights in Luxembourg? I'm staying in Luxembourg City, but would love to see some of rural Luxembourg also. which would be the best places to visit? I like castles and pretty villages. :-) thank you in advance!

Vianden is a nice town. Easy to get to buy bus from Luxembourg City.

I have to think that "how expensive things are" is relative.

I say this because we don't know your budget or what you consider expensive ( relative to something back home).

I can tell you where to walk about and what to see, but it would be nice to know where you are staying.

I agree that Vianden is a nice town with a castle you can visit. I think it was only 5 euro for a bus day pass. You could look at visiting Ettelbruck as well.
I also enjoyed our day trip to Trier, Germany via train from Luxembourg City to view the Roman ruins.
