is it worth the visit to Liechtenstein
 

We are going to be in CH for 8 days. Should we include Liechtenstein? What is there to see and I need info on booking any sight seeing tours for the area.

I would skip it, unless you just want to add another country to your list. I looked around Vaduz briefly and had lunch. Personally, there are many other places I would choose instead.

I agree that unless it is totally on your way from somewhere else to somewhere else (not likely...), don't bother to make a detour or a special trip.

We drive thought - not on purpose - going from Switzerland to Austria. Only knew because we saw a sign about the tourist office. Saw some pretty scenery and mountains (but not sure which part of the mountains were in which country).

how sad for Liechtenstein "natives"! (never been there, & no interest ...)

We were thrilled with a week's stay in a corner room with balcony overlooking the valley at Hotel Kulm in Triesenberg. To my recollection, we were perched halfway up a 15,000 foot mountain, which was plenty high, but not too high. It was our most relaxing vacation ever. Wonderful breakfasts and the chef prepared Veal Zurich for us for dinner on request (awesome), even though it wasn't on the menu, and served it himself in gorgeous copper pans. The rental car, hotel, dining, shopping, were a bargain compared to Switzerland.

We took quite a few day trips, mostly just for enjoying the glorious scenery.

That it's not the least bit "touristy" was the best plus for us.

Go in; have lunch, leave. Too many choices, so little time.

We stopped once to have a snack and to get the kid's passports stamped.

Was in NE Switzerland late last month and visited Liechtenstein. We enjoyed the few hours there, but we later figured out that the best place to see the country is not in LI, but from the south-bound service area on A13/E43 on the Swiss side of the Rhein, between exits 8 and 9. :p

I have to agree with djkbooks. We stayed at the Hotel Martha Buehler in Triesenberg and had a similar room with balcony perched on the side of the mountain and overlooking the Swiss mountains. We throughly enjoyed our time and also ate well. We had breakfast at the hotel and had dinner there one night as well. The chef's name is Giovanni (a transplanted Italian).

As for Vaduz, there really isn't much to write about - which is why I think Liechtenstein gets such a bad rap. There are a couple of interesting buildings, but it is really mostly banks and souvenir shops.

So, to answer your question - yes, Liechtenstein is worth a visit, but if you are only planning to swing by Vaduz for a few hours, then maybe not.

We are certainly planning to go back in a few years when our daughter gets a bit older.

Just wanted to say we also stayed at the Hotel Martha Buehler. It was the first night of our very first trip to Europe (1989!). Loved the views from our balcony and the alpine scenery.

I must be one weird traveler, because I like these out of the way places. To me, Liechtenstein has the most beautiful scenery, the towns are sparkling clean and the architecture is lovely. I found a theatre where stage plays are presented, and I happened upon a Christmas market, a fund raiser for a school, and interesting shopping and wine tasting. I don't understand the bad rap for Liechtenstein.

Transportation around the country is good, and restaurants are awesome, and there are some gourmet shops where you can find the best olive oil and other condiments and local wines.

I actually found an item that heats water electrically. I have looked for this in seven countries and found it in Liechtenstein. Give the country some of your time and I think you will like it.

I'm with you Laureenje. ;^) I visited Lichtenstein in 1972. I'm the only person I know (aside from the people I was travelling with) who has been there. I was disappointed though, to see a TV antenna sprouting out of the prince's castle.

I've also been to Monaco and Andorra just because they are so small. Next stop San Marino one of these days.

I don't count the Vatican as a country because... well it's just not! LOL
