Is it worth the extra travel for Croatia from Italy?
 

Hey guys, after finalising my itinerary, I want to now add croatia, but I am wondering if I should save it for another time or just do it.
The travel time is whats scaring me off i think. Ferry from Ancona to split 5 hours, then a bus or ferry down to dubrovnik;5hours then a return trip to rome via bari is about 14hours. So 24hours worth of travel...
I was thinking about adding 5 days, would that be too much if i spent 2 nights in split and 2 nights in dubrovnik, or not worth it?
I WOULD save it for another trip but i would only go ther if i was going from Rome/Florence & since i will have been there, I will most probably be travelling other countries instead...

It depends on your total time. I would not add that much travel time until I had seen Italy well, and that takes about 6 weeks.

Dubrovnik is splendid, Split less so, but both worth visiting.

Your comment sounds like a suggestion that Croatia is not worth visiting until one has spent a proper 6 weeks in Italy.

No, it is just not worth the extra travel time if you are already in Italy anyway. We just got back from Croatia in June and loved it, but I would make it a seperate trip.

im only doing venice/florence/rome in 2 1/2weeks.
what i meant was if i only spend 2 nights in split & dubrovnik, is it worth it to travel over 24hours from italy? most probably, i wont be that far south again soon because i will be doing germany/austria etc next time...

the only flights i could find were with croatia airlines & they were $300 =/

Flew on Croatia Air, round trip, from Rome to Split two years ago. No problems. Part of a package so can't quote fares. And the Split airport is very clean and modern. Then we bussed down to Dubrovnik. The trip down the coast was beautiful as was Dubrovnik. Well worth the time.

For me, the essence of traveling in Croatia is taking the time to smell the roses. It's not the sort of place, unlike Italy, that you'll see mind-boggling &quot;things.&quot; Instead, you'll soak in the atmosphere and the subtle kinds of beauty. To do that, you need some time.

My suggestion is that it's not worth spending a day to get to Croatia to spend 4 days there. That's only the equivalent of a long weekend. Unless you live so close to Croatia that you can go back repeatedly for long weekends, I'd set aside the time in the future to spend a minimum of a week there including getting there and back, preferably no less than ten days.

Just my two cents' worth.

Croatia is wonderful but I agree with the above. It deserves more than a rushed 4 nights. As much as I loved it, I don't think anywhere is worth 24 hours of travel time because it wastes precious vacation time that can better be spent elsewhere.

I wouldn't do it unless you could fly instead of take the ferry because that is just too much travel time. Europe by Air has $99 flight passes that go from Rome to Dubrovnik and then perhaps Split back to Rome, but with the taxes you will still pay close to $300. I guess you could take the ferry one way and perhaps a flight back.

If you really want to do it, and are planning on doing it, I would suggest spending all four nights in Dubrovnik. Its a jewel of a city and with 4 nights you could really enjoy it without being rushed. Split is a fine city but, imo, doesn't hold a match to Dubrovnik.

Thanks guys. I'm actually going to go to split, hvar, korcula &amp; dubrovnik (nights 1-2-2-2) with a spare night for a place I want to stay more in. So it should be fine. I want to get a feel for it, and im sure I'll be back :)
