Is it Worth it to Spend One Night in Rome?
 

I'm refining my Italy itinerary. Venice, Verona, Capri and Positano. I have ended up with a night more than expected in Positano but can't juggle things because of hotel availability.
The biggest problem is that we return home on August 17th and August 15th is a major holiday. I don't want to spend a day in Rome with everything closed, so that leaves just one day for Rome at the end of my trip.
Is it worth it??

What day would you leave Positano to go to Rome? the 15th or the 16th?

I thought leaving around 6 PM on the 15th for Rome.

But Rome is wonderful with everything closed! You can just walk and walk and there won't be any traffic or crowds. Some things will be open, you won't starve or anything!

that sounds nice, get to Rome about 8pm on the 15, enjoy Rome on the 16th and leave on the 17th.

Rome is always worth it! One day in Rome is better than no day in Rome. And honestly I don't think it would matter if everything would be closed. Just being in Rome can be a joy; strolling through piazzas, sitting in cafes, taking snapshots of beautiful cafes.

Check to see if "everything" is really closed. We were in Rome on June 2nd, which is Republic Day. There was a huge parade and stores were closed. However the Galleria Borghese and the churches were still open.

I agree that one day in Rome is better than no days. Rome is a suprisingly small city, at least in terms of the Centro Storico (City Center) where most of the tourist sights are. You can see alot in one day, as long as you are willing to push it and get moving early.

Don't forget to take the requisite breaks for wine, snacks and gelato. This, to me, is a large part of the experience of being in Rome.

Just be aware that on Aug. 15 seemingly half of Italy is on the move, and plan accordingly. If you're driving, roads will be crowded; if going by train, reserve in advance.

One day in Rome is better than not experiencing it at all! Rome is such a marvelous city for walking as you are constantly surrounded by beautiful old buildings... then you suddenly find yourself in a quiet piazza with a lovely fountain and church. And there are plenty of Roman-era ruins that you can see even if the sites are oficially closed. It's not as if they put a big tarp over the Colosseum, Trajan's Column, the Forum, the Theatre of Marcellus, the Pantheon, etc :-)
