Is it worth going to Venice in one day?
I am visiting Milan for work this week (we leave Australia tomorrow!!)
I am travelling with my nearly 18 year old daughter. We will have one to two days spare at the end of the time before we need to go to paris.I had originally planned on going to the Lakes north of milan but given the time of year I am wondering whether it might be good for us to visit Venice. We could go by train one morning and come back to Milan that night or even stay over and stop at Verona on the way back. The other plan might be to actually stay two nights and fly back to Paris (but if we do that we would have to take all our luggage) - I had planned on training to Paris from Milan to see some of the scenery. Any suggestions on what to do in one day in Venice and if we could stay over any accommodation ideas - around the US$100 mark?
I'd love to hear some thoughts on what might be possible in such a short time. Thanks

If this would be your first time to Venice and if you would not be a regular visitor to Europe, I would to do anything you can to see Venice.
Even as a day trip.
But I would try to stay overnight in Venice, it is worth it.
You can also train from Venice to Paris. There are night trains. One leaving Venice at 19.52, arriving at 13.45 in Gare de Lyon. See trenitalia.com for that. You could try and put your luggage in the train station to pick it up when transiting in Milan.
Whatever you do, train or flight, go for as long as possible to Venice.
Even as a day trip.
But I would try to stay overnight in Venice, it is worth it.

You could certainly get a taste of Venice in a day. It's such a wonderful city that even a brief glimpse shouldn't be missed.
Saint Marks and the Rialto are within easy walking distance of one another.
If you hop on the No. 1 vaporetto, you could get a bit of a trip along the Grand Canal.
If you want to say that you have been on a gondola without paying a fortune, you could cross the Grand Canal via one of the traghetti. This is a gondola ferry.

I visited Venice a few years ago with my daughter who at the time was also almost 18. Just wish I had my camera ready to capture the jaw dropping expression on her face when she stepped out of the train station and saw the panorama in front of her. You will both have a great time. Make sure to explore some of the back alleys and mask making shops. I have been to Venice 4X and I like to stay in the area near the Academia Bridge. It is central, attractive and quiet.

My first time in Venice was a daytrip. It was early November, and it was pouring down rain. We only spent about 5 hours there, total. We got lost early and often, and there was a lot we left unseen.

That was 15 years ago. Today, there are 4 separate photos from that daytrip still on display in my home.

So it's unanimous that they should go, but can anyone think of a place to stay in Venice for USD 100 as she asks? I don't know of one, although the Hotel Messner in Dorsoduro might be close. Anyone else?

I booked a triple room there last May for 120 Euros, so a double would be cheaper and this time of year probably cheaper still.
Book it through the www.veniceby.com website. Look under B&Bs.
It is small and clean and quiet. You are in an interesting neighborhood where you can walk to restaurants and to the Guggenheim museum, etc.
My first trip to Venice was with my mom and one of my older brothers when I was a little bit older than your daughter.
We drove my mom a little nuts by dragging her down intriguing alleyways instead of hitting all the sights she wanted us to see (we saw some, of course). I can still remember that 1st Venice trip w/Mom vividly.
So, whatever you do on your one day, make sure part of it is spent just wandering around and soaking up the amazing atmosphere.
Verona is a charming city with a fantastic Roman arena and a great shopping street nearby. You could easily get off the train there, take a bus or taxi up to the arena area and spend a few hours (also a nice city to spend a night in).
Have a good time.

This is the most inexpensive, decent hotel that I've found in venice, close to the train station too. For 50-55 Euros per night for a double!

Thanks so much to everyone who has responded. We are at Heathrow waiting for our flight to Milan and it certainly seems we SHOULD go to Venice.Thanks also re accomm suggestions - they look great and will follow up.

We stayed at Ca Angeli, a B&B in San Polo right near the Rialto Bridge. Very central to just about everything.
They had a GREAT breakfast and very nice rooms. It is owned by 2 brothers who go out of their way to make your stay in Venice a real treat, I just checked and their prices are 95-125 EU for the next month for a double superior.
They are on the Grand Canal and have beautiful views.

I agree! Go to Venice! It's an amazing city even if you are only there for one day. And, unless you really, really, really want to see Verona, I think you can skip it. My husband and I went at Christmas (and I still need to post a trip report); Venice is fabulous, but Verona is unnecessary unless you just want to check it off your list.

Absolutely!!! I took my daughters to Italy last April and we had less than 24 hours in Venice. We had a great time and it gave them a feel for the city. It was my third time so I'm sure they'll be back to do more indepth exploring.

Have to respectfully disagree about Verona. One of my favorite Italian cities. I've never bothered to see "Juliet's" balcony, but what I like is that it is a lively city where you can get a feel for Italian life beyond the so called "big 3" (Rome, Florence, Venice).
Besides the almost intact Roman arena and piazzas, if you like wine, the wine bars featuring the wines of the Veneto are excellent.
But that doesn't mean I'd "cram" it in on a quick trip like this.

Venice for one day is better than no Venice, that is for sure. I had one of my most magical times ever in a small hotel room in Venice. A woman I met while we were both backpacking around Europe alone ended up travelling together for a few weeks and we stayed at a small B&B type hotel in Venice and in the middle of the night I opened my eyes to see a cross perfectly illuminated on the wall. The moonlight was coming through the shutters and created a cross on an otherwise dark wall. I quietly said her name and she answered and I said, do you see it? And she just said "yeah." It STILL gives me chills 10 years later, and I am not a religious person at all. It was just magical....that it existed in the first place, and that something woke both of us up so we could witness it. I'll never forget it. Unfortunately, I have forgotten the name/location of that cute little hotel!
