Is it too late to book transportation btwn Greek Islands for Sept??
Hi Everyone - I am getting a late start on planning a trip to Greece in mid-late September. I just read that you should book your airfare btwn islands ASAP since it books up early - especially since I am travelling outside of "peak" tourist season. I know the ferry is still an option, but I have a feeling that I won't know for another few weeks the order in which I should see the islands that I'd like to visit and how the transportation will work out once I've figured out my itinerary. So, with that said, I could be trying to book air or ferry travel with as little as 3 weeks in advance. Is that sufficient or will I be stuck??? Thanks for the advice!! - Laura

Much depends on which islands you're thinking about visiting. You need to contact the airlines to see if there are still seats available for the days you want to fly. I wouldn't suggest you wait until you're there when you can easily purchase them in advance if there's space available.
Except for a very limited selection of flights, you will have to fly back to Athens in between islands. There are no island-to-island flights with Aegean. Olympic has a few from Rhodes-Karpathos-Kasos-Crete and some of the other far eastern Aegean islands.
Travel on Fridays and Sundays can be a bit more hectic since Athenians sometimes go away for the weekend but need to return to the City for work on Monday Morning.
From Crete you can fly to Athens from both Heraklion and Chania.
Aegean Airlines has etickets from their website. If there are seats available they will show up as the flights scheduled. If there are no seats available on any given flight you won't see that flight listed.

Olympic Airlines has a website as well:

If you live in the USA you can call Olympic's office in NYC for help:

No, you don't need to book ferries in advance. In mid to late September, the main season will be over, and there will be no problem getting ferry bookings. I've been to Greece several times in September and October, and never had a problem booking ferries, even for cabins on overnight crossings. The only sailings where you might have problems are around weekends, with people from the cities going to the islands on Friday evenings and returning on Sunday evenings; then you might need to book a few days in advance, but you don't need to decide till you get to Greece.
