I see a lot of places to stay close to the Railway station in Rome. However, I have also heard that a lot of pickpockets/thieves hang-out near the stn. Would anyone tell me of any experiences of staying near the train station and if there are some areas more preferable than others.

I've stayed there many times in various hotels

IMO it's safer than the tourist meccas where pickpockets and scam artists are more likely to hang out or in the station itself

I've never seen anything giving me pause for concern

Indeed a lage university campus abuts the hotel ghetto on the eastern side of Termini

In March 2006 we stayed for a week in a lovely two-bedroom apartment directly across from the Termini. Never had a problem with pickpockets nor did we feel threatened in any manner. In fact, there were many restaurants nearby, a grocery store at the train station, and very convenient bus transportation.

Now I must also add that in March 2007 we stayed in the area of the Pantheon upon recommendations of people here.

Of the two, the Pantheon was much better located for visiting the historic sites. This is the area we will return to in the future. Just more convenient to what we did.

On our last visit we stayed at the Hotel Quirnale (on Via Nazionale near Piazza Barbarini) which was a few blocks from Termini. We were part of a business group and no one in our group ever felt unsafe and there were no problems. It's not terribly convenient to most "tourist" sites and we would have stayed elsewhere had we been on our own, but we had no complaints about the area regarding crime, etc.

How did you like the Hotel Quirnale? I stayed there long ago on my first visit to Rome, I wonder how it is holding up? It was nice 25 years ago!

The area, though not the nicest looking or most ambient in Rome does offer i think the cheapest grouping of hotels and B&Bs in case folks are on a budget.

Last time i had a room en suite for around 35 euros in a hotel

seaurchin - the room was small, but clean and the bathroom very modern. Room was on the backside so view nothing to brag about. [Others in our group had some very nice larger rooms, so guess I was low on the totem pole]. The public rooms were very nice and very "classic"; the porch and courtyard in back was really pleasant and quiet. Bar and restuarant were quite good and the breakfast buffet was excellent.

Stayed at the Hotel Britannia (within walking distance to the Termini) and would go back. Old word style and also a nice breakfast.

We've been to Rome many times, my husband speaks Italian fluently we are former New Yorkers. The only problem we had with petty theives was when a gypsy tried to swipe his camera when he was in a church (nice neighborhood). So just be aware and hold onto your belongings.

Have stayed in that area on 2 trips to Rome. Last visit a block or so from the station. Never felt afraid. First visit at the Aberdeen Hotel across from the Dept. of Defense. My daughter and I walked around these areas and never saw or had any problem.

I stayed at Hotel Aphrodite on my last trip (directly across from the Termini) with a friend (we're both young females.) I never felt unsafe at all. Granted, there are a bunch of "sketchy" people who hang out near the station at night (mainly drunks), but it is heavily traveled at all times so there's really no concern. I will definitely stay here again. It is just too convenient for subway access, train from Rome airport, rental cars, and access to tour buses around the corner (for trips to Pompeii, etc.)

By the way, the hotel was great - super cheap price and totally renovated. It reminded me of a boutique New York hotel. Rooms were small but comfortable and VERY clean.

Stayed at the Best Western Canada - near the Termini and Castro Pretorio metro stop, was on my own and always felt safe.

Thanks for the recent info Hotel Quirnale. I may stay there again on a future trip. I do remember our room was the largest and nicest of any of the subsequent rooms I have had in Rome.

Hi,

I have traveled by myself to Rome several times and have stayed near Termini station in Rome. It is quite safe and I have walked all over Rome at 2:00 AM by myself and have not had any problems. Of course, use common sense, but central Rome is very, very, safe. Termini is quite close to all the attractions in Rome if you don't mind a pleasant 15 minute walk.

We stayed at the Aberdeen about 6 blocks from the Termini (on Via Firenze near Via Nazionale)and felt safe, though we weren't out past 9 or 10:00. It's across the street from the Defense Ministry which is supposedly heavily guarded.

My daughter & I stayed at Hotel Aberdeen/Christmas week 2007-we were very satisfied with the accommodations + walking distance to Trevi,Santa Maria Maggiore, Pantheon, ATM's + all buses,metro, etc. No cause for concern traveling public transit.
