>>> My husband and I will be traveling from Rome to Sorrento in September. Do we need to pre-purchase train tickets or can we purchase right before the departure time?

First understand that you are dealing with two segments operated by different entities requiring separate ticket purchase.

You "can" purchase all these tickets at the last minutes subject to seat availability, cost adder, and having to queue up (can be long) if you cannot use a ticket machine.

Roma - Napoli Centrale.

Two operators.

A. www.trenitalia.com. If you gee Roma - Napoli Centrale, you see three different kind of trains:
1. Regionale - slow cheap train stopping everywhere taking about 3 hours. No capability control, no seat reservation, no advance ticket discount.
2. Intercity - faster train taking about 2 hours. Some discount for buying ahead
3. Freccia--- of some kind. High speed train taking about 70 min. Advance purchase would save 40-50% of the last minutes price.

B. www.italotreno.it. This is high speed only private company. If you look at their ticket offerings, you noticed that advance tickets are cheaper for exactly the same seat.

Napoli - Sorrento, actually Garibaldi - Sorrento. Circumvesuviana line.

This is a commuter train segment. Very cheap. No reserved seat, no advance purchase discount (but there are passes like 3 day Artecard that includes unlimited regional public transit including Circumvesuviana http://www.campaniartecard.it/artecard_Regione.cfm). The Napoli Garibaldi station is sort of "below" the Trenitalia/Italotreno Napoli Centrale station. It is not directly below, but to get to the underground walkway, you go down from the Napoli Centrale station then walk. The ticket window is just before the turnstyles controlling access to the platforms further down below.

It is possible to board the wrong trunk line<

Yes CircumVesuviana serves a couple of different lines that branch off - make sure you see Sorrento as destination.

The U.S. State Department years ago issued warnings about theft on that line but I think things are changed since then -most folks report no unusual problems - just be vigilant about folks coming uop to you in the Naples station and on the train. Don't worry too much though.
