Is It Possible To Visit Hadrian's Wall By Train From York?
 

We're not sure if we want to rent a car in England. So I'd like to know if we can get to Hadrian's Wall from York via train?

I've had lots of trouble visiting UK rail websites - things not loading properly, errors, etc and I cannot get good information. It seems as though we can get ourselves to Hexham in a 2-hour train trip from York. Can we then get to a nice part of Hadrian's Wall maybe using a taxi or bus or tour bus?? We'd like to see other areas of Roman sites, such as Vindolanda.

Can anyone give me an idea if this is doable?

I've heard that it's possible by bus - but you're prretty far out in the country and I don;t know how often things run. We did it as part of a road trip (from York in the am , ending up in Edinburgh in the evening). There a lot to see, lots of ruins spread over a large are as well as display and a museum - so you need to plan on spending quite a while there. Perhpas you could contact your hotel for info?

The Wall is 120 miles long. Getting to Hexham, or Wallsend, or Carlisle, will let you see a bit, but that's about all.

Assuming you're not travelling in the next three weeks, your best bet - assuming it's running - is the seasonal AD 122 bus (http://www.northumberland-national-p...answallbus.htm)

Go to Newcastle, pick up the bus and either go halfway abnd come back to Newcastle, or return from Calisle by train (about 150 mins)

flanner - Thanks for the link - that's exactly what I've been looking for. I'm hopeful that I can put something together as we've all wanted to see this.

nytraveler - thanks for the input. We're staying in apartment and the owner has been very helpful with all York things, but isn't familiar with the Wall.

janis - thank you! I thought that thread might be for me, but I got sidetracked with a million other things and didn't reply. I'm just having a hard time with UK websites - my computer locks up or I get errors. Ugh! (and I'm no Bill Gates when it comes to computers, lol) I have asked my daughter (living in Nottingham right now) to make some phone inquiries as well. Last year we stayed in Haltwhistle which is very close to Vindolanda. There's a little 'hopper' bus that travels the Wall from Hexham to Carlisle. Enjoy!
