Is it okay to travel to Europe 19 weeks pregnant?

We are going on a cruise in June and at the same time we are considering starting to try to expand our little family sooner than what we had originally planned (on the trip). I guess I am getting impatient.
The cruise is for 12 days to the Mediterranean (Barcelona, South of France, Italy, Croatia and Greece) with a few days prior to the cruise in Barcelona.
I figure that by 19 weeks my morning sickness should be gone.

Of course, I am making the assumption that we will get pregnant on the first try....

I've heard of putting the cart before the horse. But this? You're joking, right?

That only happens if you don't want it to. :)

LOL Kayb!

drummer, are you sure you don't want to just wait? True, you'll be very lucky if you actually do get pregnant right away, but even if you do, you have no idea how your body is going to react. At 19 weeks I had such severe reflux that eating or drinking anything was excrutiatingly painful. Between my two pregnancies, I also had a slew of physical ailments by that time that would have made traveling very uncomfortable, if not impossible. Sure, some women have easy pregnancies, but that's a pretty big gamble. Also, wouldn't you want to have a glass of wine or two while you're there?

Granted I live in Europe but I travelled all around right up until the 37th week of my pregnancy (much to the horror of some Fodors posters!). Jocelyn is right that many people have problems in their pregnancies though. From what I have read the average time for establishing a pregnancy is 3 - 6 months so you might actually be in the first trimester and sick as a dog!

Good luck with the family plans.

I'm in my 36th week and have had nausea the entire way through. That said, I still went to Paris and Rome during my pregnancy, but not being able to drink any wine over a leisurely dinner did put a small damper on things.

LynnP is correct. it is quite rare (not impossible of course - but rare) to become pregnant on the first try. (Most of those girls who say "we did it only once" are fibbing.)

So its quite likely you will be in the first trimester then - or perhaps just beginning of the second. Whatever you decide - be sure you buy travel insurance that covers you cancelling the trip for pregnancy - I believe most don''t - unless you are having serious complications - meanng your doctor mandates you don;t travel - not just morning sickness.

>I am making the assumption that we will get pregnant on the first try....<

Reminds me of the fellow who asked his boss for a day of personal leave.

"Why?", says the boss.

"My wife wants to get pregnant and I'd like to be there."

I would check with your Doctor. I'm not an OB/GYN expert, but I understand women handle pregancies different from one another. Some get sick, some crave ice cream or pickles, some are moody, yada, yada, yada.

If I can help in any way, please let me know. (Just kidding) ((a)) ((b))

Coming up on my 13th week, I'm eagerly awaiting the golden second trimester. From what I have heard, it is the best one and the one that doctors approve traveling the most for. Obviously those are generic statements and don't apply to everyone as many people have complications. We have three trips planned in the next three months and I think I will be up for all of them. However, we decided not to make one a trip to Europe because the food and drink is half the reason we go and I obviously wouldn't be drinking the cappucinos or wine and I would be limited in my seafood and meat and so many other foods.

That being said, as others have pointed out, it is very rare to get pregnant on the first go. It took us three months and we felt very lucky that it was so fast. I would say that if you don't get pregnant on the first or second try, you should stop because a cruise during the first tri would have been torture for me. Also, _some_ doctors don't approve traveling long distances away from them in the first tri. Then again, some do. You should talk to your doctor!

Good Luck!
