Is it necessary to make train reservations (Rome-Venice-Milan-Florence-Siena) in December?

Hello! Our Italy itinerary for the last 2 weeks of December this year covers Rome-Venice-Milan-Florence-Siena-Rome. We would like to travel by Eurostar whenever it's available. Should I make reservations before leaving for Italy? We arrive in Rome on Dec 20.

Thanks!

Definitely wait until you get to Italy to make your train reservations.

Definately wait. We were there in May and had no problem getting tix the day before...just go to the station in Rome and buy all of them your first or second day there!

Have fun!

Trains can get very busy around Christmas as many people travel to be with their families. If you want to travel on one of the busy days, book your seats as soon as you get to Italy and be flexible - the trains are fairly frequent on your routes, so you may have to book on an earlier or later train. Reservations are only compulsory for Eurostar trains, so you can always get on an intercity or inter-regionale but may not find a seat.

Thank you for your replies! I will wait until I get to Rome then and make the train reservations on our first day there!

Look up the schedule on Trentitalia via the internet, and print out the dates and times you think you'll be using. Take these with you to buy the tickets and it will go very smoothly! That's what we did and there wasn't a hitch!
