Is it expected to dine at least once in the hotel dining room
We will be staying in several small hotels on our upcoming trip to Brittany. Many have separate dining rooms. Is it frowned upon not to eat with them at least once?

Yeah I don't think they care where you dine.
I took a tour in Italy that had dinner and breakfast at the hotel included. The first night I felt obligated and they would know. The food was ok but I wanted to eat elsewhere the second night no one said anything when I checked out.

There is absolutely no obligation, but you can always tell how much motivation they have by how much they tell you about the restaurant and the meal times. In my own experience, there are a number of times when you have been out touring all day and it is very nice to just go downstairs and eat there.
