is it convenient to stay near the sudbahnhof train station?

Hi, I am thinking of staying in a hotel near the sudbahnhof train station the reason why is..

I will be arriving from Prague by train and after 4 days will be departing to Venice also by the same train staion

I was thinking about the convenience of just walking to the train station but i dont have an idea if staying in this location (i think its in favoriten) would be far from the city center where the majority of the sights are

any advice out there?

thanks!

Nothong in Vienna is very far from anything else in Vienna. A hotel near the Sudbahnhof would certainly be convenient to the Sudbahnhof.

You have four days in Vienna? Then I think you'd be much happier staying closer in to the ring, perhaps at a hotel along the D tram line which goes to the Sudbahnhof.
The Subbahnhof area is not the nicest part of town, it's rather drab. It's also not within an *easy* walk of the main Vienna sights (about 30 minutes to St. Stephan's). If you were only staying one night, I'd say yes, stay by the Sudbahnhof, but for 4 nights, no. You can do much better. As discussed in one of the threads noted earlier, both the Sofitel and the Hotel am Schubertring have MUCH better locations and are close to a D tram stop that would get you to the Sudbahnhof in just a few minutes. Both are also much closer to central Vienna sights and other forms of mass transit beside the D tram.
I strongly recommend not staying by that train station...you'll enjoy Vienna much more in a different neighborhood.

You don't give your budget, which could affect matters. Hotels in the 3 star category near the centre are around € 100. It is possible that the sudbahnhof area might offer cheaper rates overall, being a less popular area.

Acutally, Sue, the only hotel truly close to the train station is a 4-star hotel and not particularly cheap. There are few other hotels in the immediate vicinity (which is a hint that it's not a particularly attractive area), so there aren't any real cost savings to be found by staying there.

I agree with BTilke. Stay in a more central location. I did some walking near Sudbahnhof and was not thinking that I wished I was staying near there.
