Completely depends on your bank. Banks in Europe dont charge fees.

Have used ATM/debit card many dozens of times in europe with no problems at all. Debit cards are safe - just make sure you don't let anyone have your PIN. (I know this sounds ridiculous - but people do it.) And sorry - if you are trveling with a group - do NOT give any financial info to other group members. People you know can be dishonest (all thieves know a lot of people - who may not suspect what they do).

The ATMs at banks in europe will not charge a fee. If it is a commercial ATM (in a store, etc) here may be a small fee (a euro or so). You need to check with your bank to see what they will charge.

I also recommend using ATMs attached to banks but also suggest you try to make all your withdrawals while the bank is open. We had a problem with an Italian ATM once and it "ate" our card. We had to go back when the bank was open to get our card back.

If you are going on a school trip, most likely other kids will use their ATM cards too, you will feel safer.

Hi CB,

>I am terrified of getting mugged at an ATM. So should I just bring cash? <

A: Calm down.
B: No.

Don't go to an ATM alone. Bring at least one other person.
Have the second person stand with her back to you facing out to see if there is anyone who looks suspicious.

If you see anyone who looks unfriendly while approaching the ATM, keep walking. There will be another nearby, or you could come back later.

Enjoy your trip.

The OP is only 17 and is too young (at least here in the UK) for a credit card. An ATM card is probably the best bet as a US debit card may not be of the chip and pin type and purchases could be made on a signature alone.

Avoid taking out small amounts ($10 or $20 as you may find a VISA fee per transaction works out at a high % of the amount withdrawn.
