as in what is the weather generally?(rome, Bologna, Venice).

Also is it off season at that time crowds wise?

Probably unpredictable, but it was very nice in early March 2002 in Florence, various places in Umbria, and then Bergamo.

I was in Rome during the first weekend last March (2005). It was sunny/rainy/cool and warm...all in the short period of four days. It snowed in Florence...but that really was unusual.

However, MINIMUM CROWDS! It was great. High season begins mid March in Rome.

Going off at a tangent... March is my favourite time to visit the Neapolitan Riviera, the crowds aren't there, a vast improvement on the summer months.

We traveled to Sicily in early March a few years ago and we FROZE our ____ off!! We were told weather was "sug-tropical" but it was more like NYC raw for March. It even snowed on day!
Our next trip was in late Sept....MUCH better!!

I found that early March of 2002 was great. Rome was 50-55F, and Florence was 45-50F. A light jacket was fine is needed at all. It sprinkled rain a couple of days. Tourist level was low, so no waiting. Some day trip tours are not offered until tourist season.

Of course, temp depends on what you like. When I left Wyoming, it was 5F with 80 mpr winds. Eventhough anything is better than that, the 45-55F was really nice.

The description of JSLee above seems to match my own personal experience, and what to expect - - statistically - - for March. Similarly, say... to New Jersey.

We were in rome in March of this year and thought the weather was perfect at mid to upper 50s. Light jackets worked well and they could come off as our walks racked up the mileage. I would definitely keep going at this time of year...perfect for walking around outdoors all day long.

On my one and only (so far) visit, I thought Rome in early March was very comfortable (50 degree range as has been noted), but then I live in Minnesota and my idea of comfortable March weather will be quite different from those of some others.

See Poohgirl, that is so the thing, everything is relative.

I'm in Minneapolis, and it's it fifty here I'm in flip flops!

To me it all depends on whether it is dry or humid. I could be in 40 degree weather, but if there is a lot of humidity in the air, it's warmer, stuffy, not cold at all.

I am thinking Venice will be more like San Fran's weather during that time of year, but my assumptions could be wrong, perhaps someone will know...

p.s. I am going to check out Rex's website suggestions - I have always used weather.com and they don't have humidity stats.

Hi Reckoning, I am pretty much convinced that March in Italy would be better than later in the year. I know there will probably be rain and possibly electrical storms etc., but the heat and humidty Italy has had the last years is just terrible.

And off season is better if you want to avoid big crowds. Best wishes with your decision.
