Is Dalamatian Coast similar to Amalfi Coast in terms of travel logistics?

Is Croatia's Dalamatian Coast similar to the Italy's Amalfi Coast in terms of travel logistics? For example - on the Amalfi coast, we based ourselves in Positano and did day trips to Amalfi/Ravello, Capri/Anacapri, etc. Similarly, can we base ourselves in Split or Dubrovnik and do day trips to Hvar, Korcula, Plitvice?

Adding on another question - should we do a couple/few nights in Hvar AND a couple/few nights in Korcula or should we pick one or the other?

Thanks!

Well hopefully you will get a poster with more experience on the Dalamtian coast. I visited the Amalfi coast several times using the public transportation (but we based in Sorrento and on Capri). The Dalmatian coast (when I researched it) seemed a bit trickier, not many trains, mostly buses so in the end I took a cruise that hit the main places I wanted to see in that part of the world. But that was awhile ago - I would think there is alot more info on the internet now that could help you research the connections.

The main difference is the sheer size of the region. The Amalfi Coast is tiny compared to Dalmatia - Amalfi to Positano is 20km, while Dubrovnik to Split is 200 km and then add another 200 km to get to Plitvice. Day trips from a single base will not be feasible, consider two bases and an additional overnight stay for Plitvice, it's simply that far out and it's wise to get into the park early, before the crowds of daytrippers arrive.

So should i plan to stay in Dubrovnik, Hvar, Korcula and Split? I saw a day trip option on Viator from Split to Plitvice. Would you recommend that so I don't have to do an overnight in Plitvice?

Or do you think I should pick up a rental car in Split, drive to Plitvice and stay overnight so I can get to the national park in the morning and then drive back and return car in Split? Do I need a car in Split?

I would do the overnight option - you don't have to do it by car, you can do it by using scheduled bus services, although a car would obviously provide more freedom. The day trip is not as enjoyable in my opinion. I cannot comment on the rest as you have not said how much time you have for this trip. I would not base myself in all four places if all you have is 10 days, for example.

if i dont have a car for plitvice, and the day trip option isnt recommended, i've read it's difficult to find a bus back to split after plitvice. does anyone know if that's true?

Do you have a guide book? It will give you the distances so you will have a better understanding of what is doable as a day trip and what is unrealistic. I do not consider anything more than 45 minutes each way day trip material.
The best strategy for a Dalmatia itinerary that includes Plitvice is to fly open jaw into Zagreb or Zadar and out of Dubrovnik (or vice versa). I would not worry too much about the bus being full. I found public transport fine on my visits, but they were all in May.
