Is Croatia depressing?
 

I wanted to catch people's attention. We are thinking of going here for our honeymoon. We have both traveled extensively. I am not too keen on the Eastern Europe drab feeling-- but know that the history, the buildings,etc... are beautiful.
Is this a good place to visit at the end of April? We want comfort. Some luxury. Fun. and not a lot of hassles or difficulties.

Depressing? Why? No way, great fun loving people, ead along the coasts, amazing history, stunning scxenary, food is ok and quite cheap, try some sailing and hop along the coast, superb. Have a few drinks in a local restaurant and you will see there is nothing depressing, indeed it's the opposite.

The only thing depressing about Croatia is that word is really starting to spread about what a great travel destination it is.

Sorry you find Eastern Europe drab. I respectfully disagree. I suppose it depends on where you went. BUT - Croatia definitely has a different feel to it, VERY pleasant, especially along the coast.

Personally, I think end of April might be a little chilly in Croatia if you were doing a beach-type of vacation on the sea. Otherwise, timing is good because you'd likely be there before a lot of European tourists get there.

Thanks! Hunnym- how cold will it be at this time? I agree that more people will catch on soon. I felt this way about a few places where I've been-- it was nice to be there before the crowds.

Is it easy to get around? Are Split and Hvar good places to visit?

I was in Croatia last September and was awed by the beauty of the country. The coastal drive and the Adriatic were stunning. We drove inland and did see some of the destruction caused by the 90s war. Depressing? More thought provoking that we humans still haven't learned from the past. I hope to return some day. In two weeks, we only got a teasing taste of what is available in the area. Type in "Croatia" in the search box, and you will find several very good, indepth posts.

Hard to tell about the weather, because anything may happen, but the temps probably range from low to mid 50s to mid 60s at the end of April. Not much different from NYC, for example. You could get some glorious days. But it likely won't be hot.

We also liked that reasonable priced food was available just about everywhere. The people were very friendly and great with the kids, it was a tough job getting the wife to agree to go to Europe again after our first trip, we found it 'cold'(not weatherwise!) but we found Croatia and Greece very welcoming. We are from Asia and appreciated the price, and again, kind people.

We'd love to do both- one week Croatia and one week Greece. Dont think it is possible.
But if you had to pick btwn those two for a honeymoon end of April which would you pick?
I have to say I am 'warming up' to the idea of going to Croatia but would love to go to Greece.

Why do you feel you cannot do both Croatia and Greece? I can understand if it is a matter of money...but are there other reasons?

No-- no other reasons-- seems like it is difficult getting from one to the other-- do you have a plan of action? an idea? Airlines? We were trying to use FF miles but that may not be possible. I would love to hear your ideas.

Anyone with recommendations with what cities in Croatia?
And best way to get to Santorini? What airlines?

Greece and Croatia are both excellent choices; but, with only two weeks, pick one and maximize your experience. Don't spend your honeymoon checking into/out of lodging...

Croatia, as everyone has pointed out, an excellent choice. It will be chilly in April, so if a relaxing beach experience is your calling, you'd be better off in Greece (and the further south the better at that).

Dubrovnik, Hvar, Korcula, Split, Trogir, Plitvice, Istria, Cres, and on and on, you can't go wrong. And, these are only a handful of the many places one can visit. If I chose Croatia for my honeymoon, I'd spend 3-4 days in Dubrovnik (walled city is one of the finest in Europe, certainly unique), 5 days in Korcula, and the balance on Cres. Zagreb is nice, but unless you're up for big city cultural experiences, skip it this time.

There is no drab feeling in Croatia!
