Is Cesky Krumlov worth the visit?
We are having some trouble planning our upcoming trip and wondered what the general opinions are on visiting Cesky Krumlov as a side trip while in Prague. We are continuing on to Munich and apparently the trip from Cesky Krumlov to Munich is round about...so is it worth the effort when we will be seeing small towns in Germany the following week? Is it a "Must See" ?
Thank you
Rosie

Yes! If you like charming, well-preserved villages and romantic castles, this is a town for you. The castle and the town is easily doable in one day. Are you driving or taking the train? If you are driving, you may want to consider spending the night there, and then driving on to Munich. Cesky Krumlov is a UNESCO World Heritage site; we visited it 6 weeks after the terrible flooding a few years back, and we still charmed by it.

Rosie, I don't know if it is too late to tell you, but I have just found out that although the castle in Cesky Krumlov is closed in December, you can still walk all around the outside and through the courtyards, and hire an audioguide that tells you all about it.
We will be staying in Cesky Krumlov for 1 night in December.

Cesky Krumlov is lovely any time! As a HUGE castle fanatic (have been to nearly 150) this one ranks fairly low on my list so I believe CK is so worth seeing with or without the castle. There are so much more dramatic and interesting castles in the Czech Republic to see! Go anyway...I would highly recommend it as at least an overnight trip rather than just a daytrip. The atmosphere is completely different in the evening/early morning when it is not packed with people.

I wouldn't go there when the castle was closed if it was inconvenient and out of your way. I definitely think the castle is the prime attraction of that town, and it is unique IMO and better than a lot others I have seen. Other than that, it's just a cute, dolled up town of which I have seen plenty just as good. I don't see any reason why one has to stay overnight if you really want to see it and that is not convenient.

Rosie:
I agree with those who stress how charming the town is. I urge you to go. We were there for two nights a few years ago in October. Besides the town itself and its castles, I found interesting shopping for arts and crafts there. If you look down the alleys in the town, you will often spot small signs for crafts stores. I bought some very nice and reasonable items in the town.
We got there by public bus from Prague. There was a rather long walk
from the bus stop to the part of town where our pension was located.

Although clearly worthwhile if you have time, I was a bit disappointed in Cesky Krumlov. It has become quite commercial, and some of the restaurants are so overrun with tour groups, that there is an air of intolerance that reminded me of Venice. There is some construction going on in the town that does not help the ambience. I thought Rothenburg and even Heidelberg had more pesonality if you are going to just spend one day. It's another story if you take advantage of the hiking, river rafting and other activities the area has to offer. By the way, do not miss the small town of Hluboka with its magnificent castle on your way to or from Prague. The town of Hluboka nad Vltavou is very elegant and clean and some consider it Bohemia's most elegant residence. You can see its castle from miles away and it's a great brief stop for some unforgettable photos of the castle and gardens making your trip to Cesky Krumlov even more memorable.
